Why did my polka dot begonia leaves become flimsy and see...
In the last month or so she has become more droopy & her leaves are very flimsy. Up until yesterday she was about 7 feet from the window.
Sydney’s polka dot begonia (Begonia maculata) looks like it’s struggling, and the symptoms—droopy stems, flimsy/transparent leaves, and being 7 feet from a window—point to a combination of low light and possible root stress.
⸻
🌥️ Likely Causes:
1. Low Light
• 7 feet from a window is too far for begonias, especially in winter or cloudy conditions.
• Result: weak growth, pale/stretchy stems, and thinning leaves.
2. Overwatering or Poor Drainage
• Flimsy leaves and drooping can also signal root rot or soggy soil.
• If the pot doesn’t drain well or the soil stays wet too long, roots can’t breathe.
3. Underwatering (if soil dries out completely)
• If the soil gets bone dry, the plant collapses quickly.
• Leaves become crispy or translucent from dehydration.
⸻
âś… What to Do:
1. Move Closer to Light
• Place her within 2 feet of a bright, indirect light window (east or north-facing ideal).
• Avoid direct harsh midday sun which may scorch.
2. Check Soil Moisture and Drainage
• Stick a finger 1–2 inches in: if soggy, you may be overwatering.
• If bone dry, water slowly and thoroughly, letting excess drain.
• Consider repotting into fresh well-draining potting mix with perlite if roots are struggling.
3. Trim and Encourage New Growth
• Cut back the leggier stems to just above a node to encourage bushier regrowth.
• Remove any yellow, mushy, or dead leaves to redirect energy.

With better light and root care, this begonia can bounce back!

@SvelteShangrila Thank you so much Ken! I just moved her closer to the window yesterday and I’ll try some of your other solutions! :)
