Hello everyone! I have a Marimo and would love some tips ...

#Marimo
4ft to light, direct
2” pot with drainage
Last watered 11 months ago
Keep OUT of direct sunlight, and i recommend putting it into a larger container [like a mason jar] with a very small air pump, just to get water flowing. It will help keep detritus from collecting inside and maintain its overall shape.

Growth wise, they're terribly slow. Don't expect to notice any size difference from afar until like, 2-3 years later.

@EcoPlantLover Welcome to the Greg community! Since a Marimo is technically not a plant but an algae we can not think of it in β€žplant β€ž terms. Marimo moss balls don't grow significantly larger. They grow very slowly, with a growth rate of about 5 millimeters per year. However, you can maintain their health and shape, which can make them appear larger or fuller. Here's how to maintain marimo moss balls for a good appearance:
1. Provide Optimal Conditions:
Water:
Change the water every 2-3 weeks with cold water. You may need to top up the water more often during the summer due to evaporation. Lighting:
Marimos need low to moderate light, not direct sunlight. Normal household light is generally sufficient.
Temperature:
Keep the water temperature between 72-78Β°F (22-25Β°C).
Agitation:
Gently agitate the water to prevent the moss ball from resting on the same side, which can promote even growth. 2. Maintain Shape:
Handling: Handle the marimo moss ball gently.
Rolling: If the marimo moss ball starts to lose its round shape, you can roll it gently back into shape in your hands.
3. Consider Propagation (for bigger appearance):
If you want a larger appearance, you can propagate the moss ball by breaking it apart and rolling the pieces into new, smaller marimo moss balls. Don't expect rapid growth:
Marimo moss balls grow very slowly, so don't expect them to get significantly larger in a short period. Hope this helps!!

@EcoPlantLover I have a small Marimo moss ball in a small cute jar with some rocks. I have it in a north facing drafty window, never gets any direct light and it’s a little chilly in the winter. It seemed happy there all winter. I change the water when I remember, every 3-4 weeks. I use distilled water. I thought that would be better than my chlorinated city water. I have also heard that they like cold temperatures and in the summer if the room temperature gets warm, place the whole jar in the refrigerator for a day to cool it off. Mine has grown a small amount in the 6 months I have had it. I was say it’s barely noticeable or measurable. But it looks healthy so I think it’s happy. πŸ˜ƒ
Thank you everyone!! The advice I got from this is AMAZING!!
