Wait until the flowers die and then prune it as soon as possible. This the time of year to do it.

The one thing I will say is don't expect perfection on your first go. It's the kind of thing you learn by doing.

Typically, when you prune flowers you prune right below the flowers. This encourages the plant to re-bloom. It also creates a fuller plant because you will get 2 branches in return for each branch pruned!

You want to cut right above a node, (a node is the area where leaves grow from). This is because 2 new branches will form on the branch you cut out of the node. They will grow in 45-60 degree angles from the branch you cut.

I like to go slow with smaller cuts and then step back to look. It's hard to see exactly what it looks like when you're up close and personal. Then I make small adjustments to try to shape it the way I want.

Occassionally you might cut a branch too far. That's okay like I said it's part of the process. It will grow back! You'll be amazed at how quickly it fills in after pruning. Enjoy the process, embrace the mistakes and have fun! After all gardening is supposed to be relaxing, so don't be hard on yourself.

These guys can tolerate hard pruning so she'll be fine.
Thank you so much for your, advice, encouragement and support!!
