It won't grow longer if you prune but it will grow wider. When you cut off a piece it will branch from a different growth point, or growth points.
If that is your goal I would recommend doing it two ways:
1. You can prune as you mentioned and stick the cuttings back in the pot to make it more full.
2. (My favorite) Is you can pinch the ends of the vines. It tells the plant not to put out new growth there and it will then branch lower on the vine, but you don't have lots of cuttings to keep an eye on, too.
