@SincereSalsify Welcome to the Greg community! Yellowing and drooping leaves on a rubber tree, commonly known as Ficus elastica, often indicate overwatering, underwatering, insufficient light, or pest infestation. Overwatering a plant, especially a rubber plant, can lead to problems like yellowing leaves, root rot, and even plant death. To prevent this, ensure the soil is well-draining, water only when the top inch or two is dry, and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Signs of Overwatering:
Yellowing leaves:
A common sign that the plant isn't getting enough oxygen to its roots.
Dropping leaves:
Rubber plants, in particular, may drop leaves as a sign of stress from overwatering.
Mushy or black roots:
This indicates root rot, a serious problem caused by prolonged waterlogged conditions.
Heavy pot:
If the pot feels unusually heavy, it could be a sign that the soil is waterlogged.
Preventing Overwatering:
Use well-draining soil:
Choose a potting mix that allows water to drain quickly.
Water when the top inch or two of soil is dry:
Check the soil moisture by sticking your finger into the soil; if it feels dry, it's time to water.
Ensure good drainage:
Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom.
Water thoroughly, but infrequently:
When you do water, water until the water flows out of the drainage holes, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again.
Consider the environment:
Rubber plants prefer bright, indirect light, and can be sensitive to overwatering in low-light conditions.
Improve air circulation:
Good air circulation can help prevent fungal problems that can be exacerbated by overwatering.
What to do if you've overwatered:
Stop watering: Give the plant a break from watering until the soil has a chance to dry out.
Improve drainage: If possible, repot the plant into a pot with better drainage or add drainage holes.
Ensure good air circulation: Place the plant in a well-ventilated area.
Consider fungicide: If you suspect fungal problems, you may need to use a fungicide.
Rehydrate: If the plant is severely dehydrated, you may need to rehydrate it by soaking the pot in water for a short period of time. Hope this helps, Happy Growing!!
The yellowing on the center of the leaf tells me it's possibly being overwatered? Check for root rot, and make sure you are watering dry soil
Do you water in the amount according to the app? If so, I notice it is set at a 13inch pot? This will promote you to water more than necessary since your pot seems smaller than 13 in diameter so it could be overwatered. Do you check the soil moisture with your finger before watering?
Thank you for your advice. ❤️
