Hi Angela! The crust is mold from the soil staying damp too long. That might be what's causing the yellowing leaves. But first...does it still have mesh wrapped around the roots? I know plants from certain sellers come like that. I won't name names, but it drives me crazy! You definitely want to remove the mesh, it's restricting root growth and could be negatively impacting your plant.
So many different things can cause yellow leaves, but I think the most likely culprit here is a combo of overwatering and that root mesh. Make sure to always let the soil almost completely dry out between waterings. These are drought tolerant plants, and when they sit in damp soil for too long it can lead to root rot. As for the mold on the surface, you can just scape off the top inch or so of soil to remove. You can also remove the yellow leaves now, or wait until they're more dried up and come off easily with a gentle tug.
If you're using the app for watering reminders, think of them as suggestions more than anything. If you get a reminder to water but the soil is still damp, click the "snooze" button and it will remind you again in a few days, then just keep hitting snooze until the soil is completely dried out. The more you use the app, the more accurate the watering recommendations will become.
One last thing...is that some Callisia repens growing around the base? π I collect Tradescantia & Callisia so I noticed it right away lol π

@stephonicle thank you for your detailed recommendations! Iβll cut the mesh off, I wasnβt sure what that was. And I had no idea I shouldβve been using Greg as a recommendation and not as the Bible πI will make sure to pay more attention to the soil in between waterings. Tysm!
@stephonicle sorry, I forgot to answer! Yes good eye, sheβs my purple queen π! Any care tips for her?
