I know nothing

Teach me about prayer plants 🙏🏻 When I brought him home a month ago he wasn’t so full but he also wasn’t so papery. I repotted him once from a 5 inch pot to this massive 8” pot. He was looking a little dusky so I moved him closer to the window and his color is improving. This week I became humidity obsessed so everyone that wanted pebbles got them. But what about his bounce? Will that come back with humidity? I know he looks crowded but this pot really is huge and I JUST transplanted him 2 weeks ago. I don’t want him to hiss at me. 🐍
Prayer plants do what they want when they want! One day ur beaming w/pride over how awesome she looks, the next ur looking for a defibrillator!! Whatever u do, NEVER judge ur plant knowledge on the progress (or lack thereof) on a prayer plant. I just pray they live to see rhe next day!!!
@BuffCaperspurge 😂 thanks for the encouragement!
I think he looks fantastic, new growth and color good in these pics.
@PoeticPukatea87 u will be great!! Instincts r a large part of good plant care! I am an RN & often use comparisons of care using how the human condition is similar to plant care & well-being. Once u know the basic needs of plants (N+ is a biggie); then u drill down to the specific plant ur caring for or interested in, its all academic. My best advice is to read as much as u can on what interests u & what u need to learn more about. Also u have a wonderful, immediate resource here at Greg!! We r all here to lift one another up & if u need us, we r here! If one of us isnt knowledgeable about ur query, we will know where to guide u so exhale and go buy some plants that make u smile!!!🫶🪴
Hi Tamarra, Here is , some, good information I found on the Internet. 🧑‍🌾 https://thepracticalplanter.com/prayer-plant-care/
@AliveGasteria71 I see those things too but what’s hard to see in the pic is that he seems dry. Not like crispy dry…dry like tissue paper. My tendency is to overwater so I combat that by standing over my plants talking to them and imagine watering 😂 His soil is damp enough to stick to my finger a bit so I know not to come at him with the pitcher. But still I worry. He’s my 5th favorite plant. 🤣🤣
@Malagueña thank you soooo much! I haven’t even read it yet but as soon as I saw the first pic on the page I knew! That plant has water IN its leaves. Off the read now! I appreciate it.
@BuffCaperspurge I saw a post today where someone compared the veins in their plant to a heart. Was that you? It was an eye-opening image.
@PoeticPukatea87 Prayer plants are happy being tight in a pot with a chunky soil. They are also very sensitive to pests and can cause you too loose them in days. High humidity is great. You’ll want to keep it on a regular watering schedule and with these guys a water meter is your best guide . I water mine as soon as the water meter hits red . You’ll know also by the leaves turn under or under that it needs water . Over watering or under watering can cause issues real fast . I keep mine so the first morning sun hits them only they can’t take much more . Also be very light when fertilizer is needed I use a slow release and dilute. You will know if it’s unhappy because they act out with burnt leaves from to much fertilizer to the watering I mentioned above. This is a plant that will tell you what’s going on by the way it acts. Here are mine . I follow the hit red on meter and bright light after . If you’re diligent in the care you’ll be fine. .
@PoeticPukatea87 I love prayer plants!! I have more than 10 varieties that I can count in sight. I might be forgetting someone 🤔 Yes they have delicate thin leaves, like humidity, and don’t like blaring hot sun at all. They are rain forest floor dwellers, so I find that’s useful to keep in mind regarding your care and conditions.

If they are seriously dehydrated, their leaves will curl UPWARDS and INWARDS. Basically they look like the new leaves coming out except that each long edge will curl at the same time. I try to always water before I see the leaf curling!! If I’m not checking the pot for dryness, I will sometimes rely on just seeing ONE leaf start to head in that curling direction. 🤫 But try not to let more than one or two leaves do that! 😂

Good luck, and feel free to tag me @DreamMachine if you have any questions or need help with them 🥰
@ILoveMyPlants @PoeticPukatea87 Oh yes, Deb’s right, I forgot about mentioning fertilizer. They don’t need a lot! And they are extra sensitive to the chemicals and minerals often found in tap water, so all prayer plants are happiest with rainwater, or distilled 🥰☔️
@BuffCaperspurge Tacy, have I told you I adore you, lately? Love your helpful and uplifting attitude. You’re the best! 🥰
@DreamMachine these are gorgeous! I took a peek at your oasis too! Oh, Lord have mercy on me!! What an amazing collection you have. I expect to spend hours checking out everyone’s plants. You are all so kind, helpful, and talented. 🫶
Good read here entertaining & knowledgeable & @DreamMachine I think I know, but putting you to the test because got some new plants lol i’ve always wanted to get one for my mother because I don’t wanna say she’s a holy roller, but we believers. Anyways repotted & split up already ”clearance” 7dollar find split into 4.
@DreamMachine It’s great to have you around for the fine tuning I seem too leave out. Thanks for being so detailed it helps beginners much more than I can explain.
@OhGollyItsJolly what a steal! Those look like calathea, prayer plant and mosaic something all rolled into one! No need to choose. 💝
@PoeticPukatea87 ok, first forget the finger & get urself a metal chopstick; use like dipstick or toothpick to test cake doneness. That way, u can tell when the plant is dry from top to bottom. Also, most of the time, the reason that leaves feel as u described is that theyre new or young leaves or even a young plant. They need to grow and they will become steonger. When i first got my swiss cheeses, i thought , these flimsy leaves will never attach to a pole, hell theyd fall off the pole, but rhey transform like baby skin does to toddler to youngster & on & on. U can spritz a particular weak, flimsy plant w/those type of leaves as they mature. Once u see the transformarion, u will understand everytime it happens. I have a 6’ BofP & i have baby ones as well. The stems on my large one would be prob equal to 30 of my baby plants, plus theyre like steel!!! I have 16“ leaves that take days to unfurl, if i didnt know better, looking at these babies i would think i got the wrong plants. The grow, they get strength (from ur care); and they transform before ur very eyes! Its like raising a child from a newborn to adolescent. The changes they go thru, their bodies, fingers, hands, skin, all of it. Thats how life is; no matter if ur a baby person or a baby plant! Thats y i love growing my own from props to adults. Thats when u can say u raised a plant, rather than adopting a teen-ager & missing all that growth & change but theyll change quickly!
@ILoveMyPlants yours are beautiful. Is that first one a rattlesnake plant? I think they’re called. I’ve always liked them too. Your info helped me pick my spot for them. Love the sunrise side “my jungle side of my property” lol the afternoon, sun here plus the salt in the air. Oh yeah, it’ll hurt ya. Been tough out there today. “Hate hiding from the sun grr lol” A lot of plants would not be able to hack it for sure
@DreamMachine my prayer plant has gotten nothing put tap water at my house. I only have one bougie plant I cater too. Yes he is in a 7 eleven cup.
@ILoveMyPlants aww Deb, thank you, you are too kind and SUCH a sweetheart 🥰 I like to explain things like how I wished someone would do to me way back when 🤭

But hey! Don’t sell yourself short, you remembered fertilizer when I didn’t, thank YOU for catching that detail 🫡 I love how we all got each other’s back around here 🤗 (I also didn’t see your comment until after I posted mine because I kept getting distracted while I was typing 🙄🤣)
@OhGollyItsJolly @PoeticPukatea87 ooh nice find! That’s a Stromanthe sanguinea ‘Triostar!’ And one of my favs! It is in the prayer plant family looove the leaf undersides
@BuffCaperspurge yes!! Same!! All my plants I have raised from itty bitty babies and it’s totally like raising kids, and so rewarding.
@PoeticPukatea87 🥹🥹 that is SUCH a compliment, thank you so much 😊 that made my day!!
@planthoe40 😂😂 I love it!! 👏 The big gulp cup just really ties it all together 😂🥰 And, I don’t usually say this when talking about basic care…but my prayer plants all get tap water too. I tell others not to, because most tap water is far too hard. But my tap is naturally very soft and only 30 ppm out of the faucet 🤫🤐

And ooh, do I spy 🔍 👀 two varieties of maranta in there? ‘Rabbit tracks’ and erythroneura?
@DreamMachine 🤷‍♀️ I have no idea. I bought one plant from Lowe's.
@PoeticPukatea87 in typical Me fashion, I forgot something, so I needed to come back and tell you that I noticed he had/has some flower spikes! Was he in bloom when you got him? Or did they come after? Maranta’s don’t typically stress-flower, they flower when they’re happy. So that is a very good sign 🥰
@planthoe40 to me it looks like you might have some of this one and this one 🧐 It could just be the lighting playing tricks on my eyes though idk 🤷‍♀️
