White mold on terracotta pots
Hello, so I recently noticed that several of my terracotta pots have developed white mold on the outside of the pot. Spraying it down with neem oil didn’t work, and neither did spraying it with 3% hydrogen peroxide. The mold just reappears once the hydrogen peroxide dries. Any suggestions?
@Ninabeena Thanks, I’m hoping I can make these work. Hope yours are doing better now!
@JauntyGrandfir Thanks! I’ll try those options.
@tnfranco I’ll have to try out some clear nursery pots.
@Peperomiawitch it’s nice because you can see the moisture and root growth and then you just put the clear pots into whatever decorative pot you want — if you’re going for a look. ❤️
Hi Tess! It actually may not be mold. I found this information. I was curious myself because my terracotta pots do this as well after I water.
e white residue on the outside of a terracotta pot is likely mineral buildup, also known as efflorescence. This is caused by the minerals in tap water, such as calcium, magnesium, and salts, that are left behind when the water evaporates. The clay material of the pot is porous, allowing these salts and minerals to seep through to the outside. This residue is not harmful and can be easily removed.

@NewPlantMama13 thanks for looking into it, Toni! Unfortunately, I think it is mold because the plants that were affected only get distilled water, not tap that would cause the mineral buildup.
