It could be from overwatering, causing root and stem rot! A picture would help to see how bad the damage is if you could provide that?
@HFplantoasis yes, agreed with @Slyvie . We cannot help without a picture. And bonus points for telling us about your care; what kind of light they are in, what kind of pot, how big the pot is, and what kind of soil/substrate, how much and often you water?

I know that’s a lot of questions, but there are so many variables it will help me narrow down the cause.
Yes, I agree with Sylvie and Nadia. We would need a picture to help both of us and to figure out the problems and causes.
@Slyvie Nine times out of ten that would indicate an overwatered cactus. If you pull lightly at the top of the cactus and twist it gently and you can see movement that usually confirms the diagnosis. Over watering is generally very difficult if not impossible to fix! I too agree with the previous two comments by @Slyvie and @DreamMachine that more info and pics could narrow down a precise answer!
Most likely rot which comes from over watering
