Crunchy Calathea White Fusion
My calathea is looking rough. She came discounted as she had some slight cold burn from being shipped during the colder months, but now sheβs even worse.
I water whenever her leaves start to droop, to not overwater, but alllll of them are crunchy. I actually thought she was dead but there is new green growth poking up.
What should I do?

Add humidity, if you have a humidifier put it next to her. I have a couple of white fusions and they seem to be the most picky with humidity out of all my calathea.
I'll also share my calathea tips below. She actually looks pretty good to be honest. But yeah she shouldn't be crunchy that caused by the humidity being too low. β€οΈ
Calathea Care Tips
1. Plenty of indirect light. Direct sun will burn their leaves. Grow lights are great, I keep my collection under grow lights 12 hours a day.
2. Water when the soil is at least halfway dry. But never allow the soil to go completely dry.
3. Keep temperatures stable. They hate fluctuating temps. Interior walls are best the temps there are more stable.
4. They love humidity a humidifier is great. I increase humidity with pebble trays below the plant so as the water evaporates it increases humidity. I also cluster them together so they create humidity themselves.
5. Ceramic or porcelain pots are best. Terracotta and plastic are bad. Terracotta is terrible for these because it pulls moisture away from the roots. Plastic does not give the plant aeration so the roots will lack oxygen. Without oxygen the plant loses its ability to absorb water and nutrients.
6. Only us distilled or rain water. Player plants are very sensitive to the chemicals in tap water.

@SuperbRaspfern thank you!! That is not a recent photo, that was when I got herπ₯² but I will def try a humidifier! She is in a plastic liner pot so I will try to find a ceramic one as well!
@Hermit Gotcha, you will be really surprised by the difference a humidifier makes. Mine started growing so fast I was able to spit it into 2 pots. She'll bounce back. They are worth it they have beautiful colors β€οΈ
@SuperbRaspfern thank you!! Will update when she recovers
@Hermit Sounds great, I love updates they make me happy β€οΈ
@SuperbRaspfern would orchid bark mixed with cactus soil (&perlite) be ok? Sheβs in peat moss right now, which is how she came, but that might not be ideal
@Hermit It depends on the cactus soil mix. They need to retain some water or else they dry out too quick.
Mine are all in a mix of:
1/3 peat moss
1/3 perlite
1/3 orchid bark
That gives them water retention while preventing root rot with a lot of aeration.
