moldy soil 🀒

does anyone know the cause of white mold growing on the soils surface? it only happens with a couple of my plants, both of which i only water every 2 weeks and one is in a southwest window as well so gets plenty of light/chance to dry out. i have tried sprinkling cinnamon on top, is there something else i can add to the soil or treat it with to prevent it from appearing? it doesnt harm the plants, just an eyesore lol. not including a pic as i know some people (myself included) have a phobia of mold πŸ˜– #AskGreg
Hey, @pixelplants ! This seems like an obvious question but I didn’t want to assume…have you tried scooping out the soil that is impacted by the mold? You can also try hydrogen peroxide. The 3% kind should be fine to pour in without diluting it. :)
@kaleena i do scoop it out when i work up the courage πŸ˜… im just wondering why its affected several of my plants over the past few years with no rhyme or reason haha. i didnt know about the hydrogen peroxide tho so thank you!
Good luck! 🀞🏻 🌱 πŸ’•
Hydrogen peroxide does work, but I prefer vinegar! Either way you can’t go wrong! You could also try putting the plants in a spot where the soil can dry out easier so that there is no moisture buildup and mold or mildew. And you’re right luckily it won’t at all harm the plants so no worries!
@emuh thank you! :)

I like to also use some cinnamon- it sounds weird but it works! I use it for root rot. Cinnamon is a natural fungicide!
@Mia i didnt know you could also use it for root rot! thats awesome
I’ve had that issue before and I think the soil was wet for too long and not enough air flow around. What I did was ensure there was air flow around the plant and used a fan too. Hope this helps :)
@rik777 i have a ceiling fan but maybe thats not enough air flow, thanks! ☺️
i use cinnamon too! makes my plants smell nice and works against fungus lol
i don’t have a lot of experience w non succulent plants but it seemed to do the trick for my ficus pumila!
