What's up #theamigos? π
Hey guys ππ I was chatting with @Alex on email about the Plant Shop and how it will work going forward... I wrote quite a long-winded reply to him (long-winded, really? Moi?! π³π€£) suggesting a tiered subscription system going forwards... and that's exactly what it seems Greg have in mind!
They're planning to improve the free offering, and then offer (a?) tiered "Super Greg" subs level(s)... So if you have no interest in free delivery or free lifetime replacements, you don't have to pay for them (in short! Lol). And he asked what I thought I would be happy to pay for that top tier (whilst the plant shop is in beta, and order numbers are low, all deliveries are free... but since Greg aren't making any money from it, they obviously can't continue to offer free delivery on the current $29.99/yr subs! Lol π€£) and I suddenly realised I haven't a clue! Or, even really a clue where to start working out how much might be "reasonable" but still cover costs for Greg! Lmao π€¦π€
So... I thought I would punt the question out to you lovely lot! (So I can at least give him SOME kinda idea! Lol... Plus I've tagged him into this post so don't need to retype the reply! Coz I'm dead smart like that! - read lazy?! π€£).
He described it as Prime for Plants... Which I thought was brilliant! Lol π₯° so... What do we think?
πΏ How much would YOU be happy paying for Lifetime free plant postage and the free replacement service?
πΏ How many tiers should be be looking at? Free, Basic (maybe one free plant DELIVERY (so a whole order rather than a plant! Lol) a quarter or something?) and Super (with all the goodies!)... Or is 2nd intermediate level needed?*
πΏ Should a mid-tier subs level offer "discounted" delivery instead of free, perhaps?
πΏ As the subs will be higher, what payment options would you like to see? Obviously when paying monthly the overall fee from the year will probably be slightly higher (common practice of course) but is that enough? Annual and monthly? Or would a quarterly option be good too? (I guess it depends how high the subs are??)
πΏ Are there other features that you'd like to see included? And at what subs level?
@Alex please feel free to shoot any other questions to us on this thread mate! Hopefully it'll be a regular goldmine if useful input for you guys!! Lol π€π€π€£π₯°
*I think having an auto prompt when you buy through the app would be good... So say you're a free Greggers and go to buy a bundle, a popup saying "if you upgrade to XXX level you'll get this delivery free AND the same each quarter!" Or something much slicker than that, but you know what I mean?! Lmao π€£
Thank you Amigos!! Xxx
P.S. I posted this to just you guys because Alex asked me the original question (about pricing) in a private email convo... But (when?) should I open it to the entire Greg membership?... Obviously Alex could've done that himself, which is why I held off lol .. and as THE most active Greg contingent at the moment... I thought a (limited, but) constructive convo between us might maybe be the best place to start? π€π§π€£
Once Greg have formulated the next phase they can ask the whole membership about developed options maybe? But I'd quite like to keep this "in house" just at the mo... Partly, to avoid overwhelming Alex and the team with reams and reams of messages! Lol but also because, we (as a group) are posting and answering the majority of questions at the moment, so are some of the most engaged (as far as I can see) Greggers π₯° I thought it would generally make things easier to handle! Lol xxx

@JenniB81 Hey my Outlander (not Outlier) friend.
Here's the thing, what unites us is a fundamental love of plants and that never falls away...it is fundamental!
However, and I didn't know this until a Gregger pointed it out, Greg is not just some guy's name but it stands for gregarious eg
tending to associate with others of one's kind: social. also: tending to live in a flock, herd, or community rather than alone.

Let's just accept the plant definition. So in some ways the Groups idea meets the open clusters or pure associations. But what could be the additional level and associations.
Let's just say, hypothetically, I am a gregarious person. It would suggest that I love the social component so why not expand that, eg messaging (just two people privately eg I believe it is called DM?) Or having the occasional zoom gathering or look at the response to the recent pets post (it eas close to 300 comments, so much scrolling) so why not expand out to plants and pets or plants and terrariums etc plants with cats, plants with coffee
There needs to be a central hub where people can go in and tick eg their interests eg dog tick coffee tick terrariums tick etc
Then by filling in my interests, I get matched. This is no different to eg Netflix or Prime or Apple TV and TV show preferences
This may be overly ambitious but it would open up so many more people who have a cursory interest in plant that could be nutured like a plant. The plant analogy can be an effective way to consider it with a tree and various branches, so a person can branch from havjbf a dog to then buying a terrarium and wanting to focus on that.
In a way i have tested it with cpclubthursday, plantmememonday, plantboosttuesday and supporter of helpmenamemyplant.
But current groups is a bit clunky. Just some thoughts

One immediate issue that comes to mind is paying for a yearly subscription rather than eg an option for a shorter period eg 3 months, 6 months or even, a payment plan eg buy now pay later π€
I don't know logistics or market research but I have already flagged gifting so why not gift an eg 3-month subscription to the Greg app and let someone really enjoy it as a gift for eg Mother's Day?
I sat on the app and didn't use it much initially so the trial period was a bit wasted on me. But then picked it up and now look at me...or at least how much time I spend on Greg.
There can be all kinds of incentives and I would like some prizes or rewards so gifting a membership has more than just the reward of giving.
Lots of ideas π‘ and where did I get that idea from?
If you want a cheaply made but Aussie classic comedy movie, The Castle! π¬ π π₯
You could tell me I'm dreaming when it comes to Greg app and its potential !
I subscribe to the "build it and they will come" school of thought

@seymour πΆYou may say you're a dreamer... But you're not the only one! πΆπ€£ Hopefully you've had enough coffee to be awake now! Lmao π€£π€£ (and so has your carpet, apparently?! π«£π€£) π₯
I think Greg app has SOOOO much potential! I love it already (no, really?! Lmao π€¦π€£) but with the kind of interaction the Greg team are putting into this, we have a chance to really help shape the app into something π€― truly mind-blowing!! I was the same with the free trial tbh, but it was this social section that convinced me to pay the subs!! π₯° And boy am I glad I did!! π€£
I LOVE the idea of being able to "gift membership for a few months!!! It would be a great way to get new customers too (I can imagine lots of half-planty types not wanting to buy for themselves, but equally not wanting to let it go once their "gifted" free period comes to its end!! π€ @alex just tagging you in so you can jump right to this fab idea!! π₯° It would also let folk try the full features for themselves for a month or two, which will surely encourage them to keep it running!
I know we have a LOT of full time lurkers! Lmao π€£π€£ apparently only around 10% of Greggers actually "engage" and there's no doubt they're missing out on the absolute BEST THING ABOUT GREG... This little community of Greggers is (recent experience to the contrary @seymour! Lol π€£) one of the friendliest little bunches of planty types I've come across! We've got some really knowledgeable and helpful plant whisperers, and experts in all different kinds of plants! (I don't know why you WOULDN'T want to engage! Lol). So, some kind of incentivisation to get people talking would be great... Maybe Xp (or points) converting to discounts on Greg merch? Or being able to swap points (accumulated by interaction!) against discount vouchers for the Plant Shop suppliers maybe? It'd be great to be able to get people TALKING more! π I mean, we #theamigos) are kinda making up for the silent types π€£ but I don't think most folk actually realise just what they're missing out on! π€π€¦π€£
I think I'm gonna have to get a spreadsheet going (woohoo! geek fun! ππ€£) to work out how often I ACTUALLY order plants online (locked to my hubby of course... Can't have him finding THAT out!! Lmao π«£π€) and how much of that cost is shipping... Just to try and give @alex some useful figures to work with! Lol π€£
Great ideas to start us off there, my lovely! π₯°π₯ Xxx

@JenniB81 I am really loving the idea of the experience points being able to be converted into some kind of points for "Greg Merch"! Very cool idea! It would keep people engaged and using the app.
@ILoveMyPlants what the tiered options offer are that you can keep your Greg subscription just like it is now and not have to have all of that extra stuff if you don't want to! π

@JesssJungle Thatβs very easy to understand and I totally agree ! I thank you for taking the time to explain it in a paragraph . I was unable to articulate all you had written before and found my frustration getting the best of me ! Of course Iβm in
@ILoveMyPlants no worries, Deb! I'm glad I could put it into words that make more sense to ya! π
Aww @deb you totally belong here!!! I think the idea is that they want to expand the functionality for free members and for everyone who plays as well!
So, if you have limited funds or are just happy with Greg as is... You'll get more value for money without extra cost. But there will also be be the option to up your membership plan for EXTRA benefits (like continuing unlimited free shipping and replacements, which I know I would like! Lol π€£)
Alex asked the question so Greg can reasonably (& responsibly!) set the subs levels so they're affordable for US (as we're the "consumers" in this arrangement!) but also covering costs for THEM (as they make literally $0 out of the plant store and are offering free shipping out of Greg's own pocket during the beta phase - i.e. Just now - because the annual subs as they are simply don't cover that kind of expense!).
Sorry if I made it all sound horribly complicated in the original post!! Lol π₯° xxx

@jessjungle just a wee thought off he top of my head (which is getting bigger! Lmao be warned)... I'm part of other platforms (non planty ones mind you!) that offer a similar kind of trade in scheme and I think, as you say, it would keep people talking! Knowing that more XP means being able to get exclusive Greg Merch, or discounts or... Whatever they decide? Lol π they could even offer tags to boost your points like "post your latest plant" or "post a meme in #plantmememonday" or whatever?! I don't know... We're brainstorming for Alex and the rest of the team π₯° lol so... Keep the ideas coming!!
There's no such thing as a silly suggestion!! Even if you don't know how it would work in practice, shout them out guys!! π This is great fun! Imagine what Greg will look like in 2 years time and describe it?! If you think you don't have any ideas .. I'll bet ANYTHING that not true! π₯° This is our chance to help shape our beloved app! π₯³π₯³ Xxx

@jessjungle I wish I'd run it by you first Hun! Lmao ππ you described it so succinctly! I should've gotten your input before I rambled off on one π€£π€£π€£ xxx
@JenniB81 My head was spinning try to follow the post . It all good and I would definitely pay more to have a safety net on the plants . I also think the plant shop will pick up And people who are paying for the perks should keep them . Those who arenβt should be inspired by the money they would save with premium membership
I totally agree Deb! @ILoveMyPlants) π₯° I love the idea of a tiered membership... So you don't get "wasted" benefits that you're paying for but not using... If you're feeling an income squeeze you can downgrade for a bit, and then move back up when you're ready etc. It will make things a LOT more flexible in this ever-changing-cost-of-living-challenged world we live in!! π₯³
And I'm especially impressed that Greg are consulting us... It's kinda standard practice (for NEW UK businesses anyway... I've definitely noticed a trend in the last couple of years!) but for an established brand to do it is really refreshing! π₯° After all... We're the ones who will be using the app so tailoring it to our preferences makes total sense! Just most business don't yet bother... But it's getting there π
Sorry again for burbling confusion in the OP! lmao π€£ I got all excited and my fingers ran away with themselves I think! π«£π€£π€£π€£ Xxx

@seymour I finally found your "gregarious" post! Lol like the pets post this one has grown arms and legs!! Lmao π€£π€£ I think it's essential that Greg fine tunes the groups thing too! I get the dint want to be Facebook... But this is WAAAY better than Facebook (or FaceCrack as my Scouser friend Jay calls it! Lmao π€£π€£). Having the ability to...
Have "private" groups
Link to other socials
A beautiful plant-based "tree" of groups and subgroups etc.
Listing a Greggers own posts under their profile (to make them easier to find! Lol) a simple "jump to" when you hit a notification!! So it takes you to the comment NOT just the post! Lol
All these are fairly minor tweaks (except maybe the tree of groups) that would improve use ability no end!!
Greg had SO quickly become my favourite social! π₯° Xx

@JenniB81 @JesssJungle @PoisedAlbo @Seymour @ILoveMyPlants @eeriewoodlander @Merranda @FlowerFairy @LaSiguanaba @signorebean Dang once again late to this party ππ Man this is such an open ended problemβ¦ I am with @Seymour I know there are groups being made everyday but how do you find them? π±π± it would be amazing to see what groups there are to try and expand my interests while satisfying my current interestsβ¦ I know this is a plant app first of all and I love how it learns with my plants but there is also a special aspect built in and I feel like the basics are being missed..DM, search functionality, the scrolling issue..If I donβt respond to a tag itβs a good chance I will miss it and not see it.. Hell I almost missed this one since I can get to the group through a search.. I would pay more for these features to make it more enjoyable for myself and less of a headache.
I love the thought of a XP exchange for stuff that sounds cool.. How would that work? The more I take care of my plants the more xp I get? If itβs based on the social aspect would it be answered questions? Thoughts on that cuz Iβm interested π
For me I pay for the app since it gives a little more than the free version and that is before the Plant store.. I like to connect with others that are like minded in hobbies and interests..that keeps me engaged in the hobby of plants..being able to share and grow is a big part for me..
Maybe you pay more for these features either monthly or yearly..
What about getting new folks into the app? Maybe there should be a path for partnerships with users and Greg? I know they have a referral thing but I have zero idea what that all does..
Sorry yall got me just rambling but man there are so many ways you can take something like this. TBH

Yes, definitely a few of the interfacing things can be improved like being able to see all of a certain person's posts, replying and having to scroll to find the comment, also the fact that you can't really reply to a comment but have to tag that person. And I feel that the groups could be much more utilized. All very good ideas, guys!
I pay for the app too and I think it's more than worth it. I would be willing to pay more to have more features, for sure.

Specifically features we'd like to see in the new tiered subscriptions that are coming π but you've actually made @seymour and @macstracks point perfectly!! π All this scrolling is ANNOYING! lol and I wrote so damned much on here it's REALLY easy to forget what bloody thread I'm on! π€£π€£
@macstracks great points Chris! π Yeah the XP exchange just fell out of my brain during the convo (which is kinda the point of brainstorming isn't it?! Lol π€£) I dunno... You get basic xp for plant care/ adding new plants etc... but I'd like to see bigger points for answering questions (currently 20xp) and a BIG xp boost for "best answer" (not sure what that's set at currently! Lol π€£).
I LOVE the idea of a Greg referral system... Invite your planty friends and get store credit?! π€π₯° So many companies do it I think Greg are missing out at the moment! It's a simple way to incentivise growing the business.
I think we're all mostly paid up SUPER GREGGERS in #theamigos! Lol π€£ but I totally agree that the social side is the bit that really grabbed me about Greg! I'd found searching online that Greg kept popping up with good answers so signed up for the free trial, and within a few days I was hooked! I now spend more time on here than any other social site! π«£ππ And I totally understand they don't want to be "PlantBook" necessarily, but it's a great USP they have in this community that other plant apps totally lack! If it was just watering reminders etc I doubt I'd pay for it tbh (as the founder of #FAAFO I'm not really one for reminders etc... I keep having to manually update watering dates coz I "potter about" then 2 days later Greg tells me it's watering time! Lmao π€£
Just to try and pull it back more to @Alex's original question for a sec though... Anyone got any thoughts on pricing structures?! π€ I haven't done my sums yet so no pressure! Hahaha π€£ xxx

Ooh! just to completely ignore myself for a sec ππ I wish we could streamline the tagging!! My fingers ache constantly typing everyone's handles!! Lmao π€£ I actually typed them out in my phone noteoad, outside of Greg, so I can copy and paste the ones I type most often π€¦ββοΈπ thank god @seymour created #theamigos! It at least saves me some bother!! Lol π€£ xxx
@poisedalbo I totally agree Audrey... I used to have Blossom before discovering Greg, but found that the diagnostic bit was a bit rubbish (it literally said EVERY plant issue was overwatering!! Lmao... Which isn't me essarily wrong in most cases lol π«£π€ but I knew the cause was something else with a couple of my plants and ended up ditching it because A) I found Greg! (& Now my life is complete! π Lmao π€£) And B) I didn't trust that feature, which is the main reason I got the app in the first place! Lol (also the ID on blossom is NOWHERE NEAR as good as Greg's!) xx
@JenniB81 I like the idea of levels as people may start in eg kindergarten/basic and the graduate to a total of 5 levels with the cost reflected accordingly π
So I see it analogous to streaming services with even the possibility of a cheap sub basic one that involves some form of advertising for partner products. Does this makes sense?
The free or basic should remain the same but you could have either an upgrade with conditions eg ads or pay more to be free of them or even different payment structures eg use now pay later?
The actual price points need to be competitive and take account of costs @alex

Good morning everyone ππͺ΄
So I think I'm all caught up (hopefully π). I feel like at this stage we should perhaps create another post compiling all our suggestions in a list, so we can make it easier for Alex to take them in π which btw leads me to smth I just thought of - being able to select & copy content from a post, that way we can take notes. I have plenty more ideas, in fact I was thinking of emailing them myself a few days ago, but I don't wanna pile up on the thread before we organise it π«£ do you guys agree? I'll try to get started right away

@eeriewoodlander I think a succinct bullet point list would be perfect! I bet Alex would appreciate that lol. I do like the idea of being able to save posts/comments to a "notes" folder of some kind. Currently, I take screenshots and keep them in a "Plant Info" folder on my Google photos.
@JesssJungle absolutely, and tbh that also leads me to my other idea of saving whole posts/threads for future reference, similar to Twitter's (or X's π) bookmarks...
We're talking about major changes here tho, from an app development pov... π«£ which is why it's very important to list the ideas, then the team can keep track of them as they go and put them aside for later as convenient ππ» these things take time

@eeriewoodlander I totally agree!! It's something that can be done waaaay down the line.
@eeriewoodlander that's a great idea! π I'd love to be able to bookmark posts or responses... And being able to copy paste sections of text and add them to ("tha back of"?) a plant card (so only you see them!) would be handy too... Compiling tips and tricks for specific species into a kind of plant card scrapbook kinda thing!
You're right that it's major changes... But as I've typed so many times in the last few days the social side of Greg is one of its biggest selling points for me! So making it as intuitive and user friendly as possible is really important to the end product! π₯° Xx

I will start compiling bullet points for Alex! Lol I thought tagging him in would be sufficient but didn't expect the volume of brainstorming that's resulted! π€¦ββοΈπ€£π€£ So props to you guys!!! We've already gone up with some AMAZING ideas, upgrades and general useability pointers for the G-Team! ππππ₯° Keep em coming! I'm taking notes ππ€π€£ xxx
@JenniB81 I really like a lot of the ideas and think we have a wonderful community. That said, I also have some questions concerns .
Private groups would they consist of paying participants ? If not I could see feelings coming into play.
Then the XP points/ Good idea though, I gotta wonder if it might not get a bit out of hand
As it stands we have meaningful conversations and answers. Though peeps could just start answering nonsense for the XP points. I think this could bring the community down.
I really enjoy Greg the way it is and realize without growth it wouldnβt last .
I donβt participate in social media due to the caddie chat and bickering.
Thatβs why I love this app so much! Itβs more real and true to its people .
As mentioned above I realize Greg has to grow and think the developers are anticipating this also .
I look forward to the changes and hopefully no one takes my comment too personally

@ILoveMyPlants don't worry Deb, we're listening, your concerns are 100% valid, I thought of those same issues too!
I think the private groups could indeed create "cliques" which wouldn't be too nice, especially cause it might make it harder to moderate (as in know if what's going on in there isn't offensive or inappropriate); the same goes for DM's, which would also raise concern ab privacy issues and unwanted messages/spam.
We don't know the implications of all this as users, but I'm sure the Team will find a good mechanism to prevent these things from happening, though the private groups might be more of a social issue as you mentioned...
at the end of the day tho, we're just brainstorming atm, so we'll reach a good decision when time comes! perhaps we could open up a survey or vote eventually π₯°
About the XP points maybe there could be a reward system based on likes? e.g. you get 10 xp for commenting on a question, like you do now, then you get +10 xp if your answer is marked as "helpful" and +30xp if it's marked as best (for a total of 50 points, which could amount to like 0.5 coins? lol) that being said, I think depending on how much the xp is worth in the credit conversion it might prevent these things from happening - I surely wouldn't have the motivation to type a bunch of nonsense for peanuts π

Now gang!! I have compiled a bullet point list with all the suggestions mentioned here, which I'll be posting separately (or I can paste it here for @JenniB81, the OP, to post it on our behalf ππ) and I also added a debugging section. Anything you'd like to report for me to add to the list?
P.S. if I missed anything u can let me know in the comments there and I'll edit the list π«Άπ»

I just read this WHOLE thread π and loved hearing all your thoughts.
@eeriewoodlander if you ended up writing a list can you point me to it?
I also wanted to share we are working on these features next, I think youβll love:
1.) Converting XP into Rewards to use in the Shop.
2.) Better plant care articles, editable by the community for organizing best practices (imagine a Wikipedia for plant info).
Weβre also working on growing our team so that we can start making improvements to the community feature. I agree the potential is much bigger than what it is today, if we make it easier to use.

@PoisedAlbo weβre only planning on hiring mobile engineers, and itβll be some months before weβre ready but I love the thought β€οΈ π€ happy to help in other ways if I can! I give a great referral, can speak to your community engagement skills πͺ
@alex thank you Alex, for being so engaging and caring about what your users really want! You and the team are awesome! And the new features you're working on are gonna be GREAT!! ππΈ
@alex πππ You Freakin ROCK!! I think thatβs so cool that youβre so engaging I LOVE IT!!!
@alex oh wow that's fantastic news!! I love that number one is one of our brainstorming suggestions! π₯° Just shows how well you guys know your membership if you thought if that before we did! ππ And the idea of a wiki style knowledge base that can be edited (subject to approval) but the community is fantastic! We'll quickly end up with probably THE most comprehensive data source on all things Planty! I have no doubt if that!! π₯°ππ₯°π

Lol @poisedalbo Audrey i just said basically the same thing before I read your comment! Hahaha π€£ that's so funny! But you first honey π₯° I'm technically employed, just having a mid career crisis! Lmao π€£π€£ xxx
Wow Audrey @poisedalbo)!! π²ππ²π That's SO fucking cool honey! π₯° It really sucks bring out in that position though doesn't it?! But you had to do the right thing for you and the next amazing job you will LOVE (because dint settle til you find it! Life is TOO bloody short for that!) is just around HR corner waiting for you! π₯° We work to live not the outer way round... But I'm a hypocrite if course! Lmao ππ I love my job ENORMOUSLY, but I'm the environment has really started to get me down recently and it's time for a change. I've been doing it for nearly 20 years aside fron18months caring for my mother in law toward the end with my partner, I'm ready for the next challenge now... something to satify my desire to encourage others to get behind doimh everything that's needed (though not nevessarily easy!) to fix the mess we've made it this planet before we no longer have a choice about it. The Scottish Executive have really ambitions plans to hit net zero by 2045 and they consulted about process, I was really lucky and privileged to take part! It was really a fascinating and enlightening few months, they chose a deliberately broad range of people and backgrounds and opinions but there was also a lot of consensus! Which was really encouraging, and made me start to believe (probably for the first time in all honesty, really) that we really might be able to sort things out! We have the technology already, the problem is cultural and we have to just change that.
I was behind an eighty year old man today who very politely asked the funky rock chick who works in my Scotmid what her pronouns were! π₯°I actually got a bit emotional! Lol (but I am perimenopausal so.. it happens lmao π€£ π€£)... Imagine the changes in attitudes that man had witnessed in his life?! Lmao π€£π€£), but if he can do THAT with such ease and understanding... We have a shot at changing minds and educating people. I owe it to my grandkids to try! π₯°
Or, y'know, something along those lines... Haha π€£ if only I could write my own job description!! Haha π€£π€£ xx

@eeriewoodlander we actually have over 1 million visitors from Google search to our plant care articles per month. So itβs a top priority for us to make it possible for the community to help cultivate great plant photos, data, etc. :)
Weβve even started showing up in special search result spots usually reserved for Wikipedia, so Google is learning to trust our data as well. Especially for rare cultivars.
