Sunburn/browned leaves

my monstera got sunburned! What is the best way to go about cleaning it up without ruining the plant? #help #Monstera
6” pot with drainage
Last watered 1 year ago
Hi Clarissa, I don’t think there’s a way to fix sunburn. Is it just that one leaf? If so, then you can trim off the burnt part. Monstera like indirect filtered (think sheer curtain) sunlight in a southern or western facing window - direct sun scorches leaves. They like soil that has peat moss, they don’t like soil with barks or compost.
you can either leave it or cut the brown part off. Neither option will hurt the plant, it's just a matter of aesthetics.
It's actually a very common issue for plants with chimeral variegation (like monstera albo) to either get too much light and burn, or not enough light and lose its coloring. How long have you had it?
@clarinkle WOW your plant is so beautiful! I would recommend that you trim off the burnt edges. I would then tap some pruning sealer along the trimmed edge and hopefully it will prolong further damage to the leaves.
Here’s what I use and it actually works.

@SesameSeeds777 hmmm maybe about half a year? the burning just happened this last month. I had no other places in my apartment to put it and the UV index has been super high lately. luckily, it’s in a different spot now.
@clarinkle Impressive! Many people don't manage to keep the variegation for that long. Best of luck proceeding!
@SesameSeeds777 I am super happy that this specific plant hasn’t caused me problems til now, it’s thriving otherwise!
@PlantJedi How do you know it's a Thai Constellation?
@PlantJedi Albo can have green undertones too. Not if it's healthy, but if you look at older photos of this same plant, you see that bright white that is characteristic of albo. It can get green undertones if it's not getting enough light though, it means the variegation is starting to go away
@PlantJedi The marbling is definitely true that they typically do more marbling, but albo can have lots of marbling too. I'm assuming this person got it from a seller, and they usually label it right
@PlantJedi I see. I did think it looked like Thai Con at first, but then I remembered they look really similar so I dismissed it. Also, I didn't know they were white when young. That's cool! That also explains why it hasn't lost its variegation yet after 6 months. I was surprised because usually albos don't last that long after being sold due to their unstable variegation. That sure explains it!
@PlantJedi oh! okay! i didn’t know that! it was marked as an albo, but it definitely could’ve been mismarked!
@PlantJedi well, I did say sunburn when I thought it was albo- which are prone to sunburn
@PlantJedi it was super close to a window, it was the only place to put it at the time due to how my old apartment was. luckily it’s in a new location, so hopefully it won’t happen again. what do you suggest about the burn mark? should i cut the leaf? do i leave it? it *was* my favorite and one of the biggest leaves but now it’s half burnt !
