Is my bonsi (chinese elm) dead, dying, or healthy?

I just bought my first bonsi from a local store because it was on clearance. I'm not sure if it is alive, with diseases, or healthy. It had no leaves when bought. Is this okay? If it is sick, is there any way to restore its health. Also, how can I keep it healthy. It is currently on my desk near a window, but I'm not sure if this is the best spot for it?

Thank you. Any help would be greatly appreciated 😊❀️

We also have a Chinese Elm and she’s scared us a few times, dropping all the leaves several times a year. We finally got it on a schedule where we winter it in our basement with a plant lamp. The rest of the year it’s in an east window and doing great. We also repotted (same pot new soil) it once because we wanted to check the roots. I realize I’m not much help here, but hang in there!
I would perform the bend test first to check for life. Choose a branch and bend it. If it is flexible, then the tree is still alive. If it breaks, I would perform the scratch test on different branches to see if it is still alive
