Burro tail is dropping leaves

Good evening πŸͺ΄ my Burro’s tail has recently started dropping leaves at a rapid rate - has anyone else had this? I’m thinking it could be a result of the weather getting cooler here in the UK? Nothing to worry about or some intervention needed? #SucculentLove

Does your succulent sit nicely in the pot or do you think the pot may be too small for it?

I think your succulent may have overgrown the pot its in and it’s not drinking water properly, which may lead to loss of leaves.
@kscape Interesting, I’d never have thought about that - it’s in a plastic pot with drainage which sits within the decorative pot. My only worry is, how do you repot a Burro’s tail without losing all the leaves πŸ˜‚ they are so delicate, I can only imagine the disaster it would cause having to repot it πŸ˜‚
I agree with Dariana it looks like it needs a bigger home... Gently place your hand on top, invert it and squeeze the plastic pot or use your finger/a chopstick to push through the drainage holes. It will help to have your new pot prepped and ready before hand, but as long as you're really careful and gentle it should be fine. (:
Amazing, thank you @kscape and @WickedValkyrie - I might have to make a short-term sacrifice and lose some leaves for the greater good of the plant πŸ˜‚ I just hope they grow back or I’m going to have a pot full of sticks πŸͺ΄πŸ‚
@nottodayben I promise theyll grow back! Your baby looks extremely healthy so I dont think itll struggle, in fact, it may grow even more now since itll have a bigger home to thrive in! 🌿✨
@kscape looks like I finally have a valid reason to visit the garden centres for new pots (and a new plant or two no doubt πŸ˜‚) - thank you so much for your help!
I'm following this one because I love my Burrow's Tail and want to know how to keep this from happening! I regularly knock off a random leaf, you know, by breathing on it. But they go right into the propagation cycle. I could use a success there! Ben, do you propagate them? If it works, please, tell me everything!

Questions about your plant - has the temp in your home dropped significantly? Had the humidity level suddenly changed, at least near that plant? Is the plant near a draft or heater? Or a window that now feels cold rather than radiating warmth? Obviously, you have fewer hours of sunlight - have you considered a plant light/bulb/halo? This one doesn't have a light listed, if I'm seeing them right in your extensive and beautiful oasis! Another thought - your growing season is over I'd wager; have you reduced waterings? It's ok to snooze them - that's part of how Greg learns, I think. How are the two other Burrow's Tail plants doing and if they're well, what's different between them? I don't have any answers for you, but I can ask some good questions! It seems odd that your plant would basically eject a bunch of leaves, but that's how it propagates and, like all living things, that's its first biological drive. So, (and I'm not sure that's what's going on but it could be,) so if that's the case, what changed that threatens this plant's survival? What changed in its microenvironment?

Ok, that's all my questions for now... You have beautiful plants! And I'm sure someone will come along with the answer πŸ’š
And @kscape has a very good point that I did mean to ask about! I still wonder why it would drop leaves... But have fun repotting - I was a nervous wreck getting mine settled the first time and yours is so full! There must be a trick, like wrapping it in tissue or parchment paper or something..?
Odd idea πŸ˜‚ can u fit a hair net over it ? It's worth a shot when repoting . When I repoted my string of turtles , the turtles were on the run .
I do the exact same thing with leaves I knock off @Paradox!! But so far, they don’t seem to be doing much in my propogation attempts - I tried to lift one of the lil beans that have been in there for a while and it had resistance so I assume roots are growing, I just expected it to grow wayyyy faster πŸ˜‚

Humidity probably hasn’t changed too much but you are definitely spot on with the weather - it has changed quite dramatically - we had a crazy warm few weeks here in the UK which was super out of character but we’ve recently dropped quite a lot (the hottest was 104 but we consistently had 80s for a while but have already dropped to 60s some days with it set to get colder as we approach autumn)! It is quite close to a window - maybe I should move it away from any draft and into my office where it’s warmer and bright! I don’t have any lights as it goes - but that might change as autumn and winter fully take over and my plants suffer πŸ˜‚ I am going to reduce waterings, I learned the hard way through losing a few plants that Greg is reminding me to check, not automatically water and overwatered a few over my time - but we learn as much as Greg does!

So it might thrive, especially over winter, in a bigger pot and warmer room away from drafts! Your oasis is also stunning, so much vibrant greenery!!
@indigenouswoman that might actually be a genius idea - or maybe even Saran Wrap gently? Although even as I type that I picture peeling it off and being left with a graveyard of tails πŸ˜‚
@nottodayben Hope I was able to answer your question! 😊
@Paradox Leaves would fall off because they’re not receiving the right amount of water to sustain the leaves! If the succulent is rootbound, the roots are too tight for any water to fully be able to go through the soil :)
@nottodayben @kscape is πŸ’― correct.
@kscape Thank you for explaining! I think you answered @nottodayben far better than all my questions. Glad he hit "best answer" for you! And I think he's got a good plan.
@indigenouswoman - you made me think of using stretched out old hose - only no one wears them anymore! But a really gentle wrap, mostly to keep it together so your hands can do what they need...

Ok just watched a video and letting the plant dehydrate did 2 things - leaves are less likely to fall and soil pulls in from the sides of the pot. And then she did something insane - she put about five skewers straight down into the plant and used them to lift it out and transfer it to the new pot. I got lazy after the craziness and stopped watching My Secret a Weapon For Repotting Burrow And Donkey Tail. Ah, she gently lifts branches where there are natural gaps, scouts some do in and uses the skewers to spread it around. Then very gently she adds some on top of the root ball but under the branches. It might be helpful @nottodayben! She never pours from the top which I think is brilliant.

No saran wrap or pantyhose, but skewers! Who would think to use something hard and pointy with something so delicate? It's like she has no box to think outside of!
@nottodayben lol u can cut a hair net away for sure ... If it comes down to that, please take pictures lol
What about those head scratchers ? Stick it down gently, turn it to the side and slide it out ? I used it for a cactus before
I cut a whole in the bottom of a plastic grocery bag same size a pot. Gently slide it up the pot, synch at the rim and raise the branches while pulling the bag up and synch at the top. This allows you the room to grasp plant around the bottom and remove from pot without ever touching the plant. Also leaves room to fill in around the root ball without having to move the branches out of the way. Good luck with your repotting.
Genius @Stall54Jo ....genius.....🀩
Thank you @kscape, @Paradox, @Stall54Jo, @KikiGoldblatt, @indigenouswoman ☺️ so many good ideas and knowledge sharing!!
