But as you can see with mine, it got better and nothing to serious happened other then it looking like it had a ozempic shot.. 🀣 eventually it went back to normal.
Well, it is not etiolation as that is evident in new growth, so light is unlikely the issue. This leaves water or nutrient deficiency issues. As the weather warms in your southern hemisphere, perhaps make sure that you are giving it enough water. I know that we all lean towards underwatering cacti (for good reason), but make sure that when you do water it you give it a good soak. I always suggest bottom watering (affectionately called butt chugging in some circles).
Also, older, healthy cacti will naturally develop a hardened, woody, and slightly shriveled base, a process called corking. The base will be firm to the touch, not soft or mushy, like a rotting cactus.
I know exactly who could solve the mystery @Boymom-plantmom . Or @TidyTigerpear . These ladies know their cacti. I would have tagged two more but forgot the whole username.
I’ve experienced this before , I think it is from lighting changes or maybe lack of light.. if it’s not mushy or turning yellow or showing any signs of rot then it’s not from overwatering. This is a similar cactus if not the same. I’ve had a hard time coming up with a definite ID for this one as it didn’t come with a tag.
@TidyTigerpear Ozempic shot Im πŸ’€πŸ€£
I don’t have that exact one but I agree! They do weird things for weird reasons. Check to make sure it’s not squishy and I would check again in another few days. Here are two of my fav! And as you can see she is a mess but alive 🀣 and
@Boymom-plantmom that was the best way I could put it 🀣🀣
@TidyTigerpear oh my god that’s gold πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
@SlinkyFanpalm37 I thought it was pretty funny myself πŸ€£πŸ€—
Thankyou everyone! He seems too be a bit of a fluro yellow at the base? Very spiky down the bottom ( not so much soft hair ) so unsure if squishy 🫣 πŸ˜‚
@SlinkyFanpalm37 🀣 Do you have any tongs or something to give it a tad squeeze?
@Boymom-plantmom yep so i did manage too use something and i dont think so πŸ˜‚
Cacti grow this way (more narrow at the bottom). Your cactus is not a "youngster" any more. It"s a mature cactus and it's preparing to get woody at the bottom, for strenght. (similar to a tree trunk).
Your cactus is healthy.
@SvelteKingfern Thankyou!!!!!
You're welcome. My specialty is cacti.
@Boymom-plantmom Hello Jennifer, your lovely cactus didn't like something that was changing periodically, hence the change of colour and corking on the surface. Make sure that it's fertilized properly during the growing season with the fertilizer for cacti, that it is not bleached by too much sun, and that water doesn't stay on it's flesh.
