Hi David, First remember to water it lightly . About twice a month. Overwatering seems to be one of the biggest causes of cactuses dying. Make sure if you have your cactus near window that it’s not too close to the window. One way to tell is to place your hand next to the cactus facing the window for a minute. If it’s too hot on your hand, it’s too hot on the cactus. I would also suggest putting it in the terra-cotta pot. Good luck. 👍
When you repot it put it in really chunky soil. And when you water it let it get 100% dry for about a day or two before you water it.
@Malagueña Thank you! I’ll probably move it back a bit. Also, how soon should I repot it? Is it okay in the nursery pot for now?
@make-be-leaves Nursury soil is definitely not the best. It’s made to retain moisture in commercial nurseries, and doesn’t wick water away fast enough. As soon as you get a gritty cactus soil (Don’t use Miracle Grow for cacti!) I would repot it and don’t water for a week after that to give time for any micro cuts in the roots to heal.
@make-be-leaves , for now yes. Cacti are not particularly fussy. I like Terra cotta because they absorb much of the excess moisture in the pot. That’s why I like them.
@Malagueña Already bought a terra cotta pot! I’ll change it in a couple days since I just watered it today
This is a desert cactus, and the soil should mimic its natural habitat, 75% inorganic grit and 25% organic material. Let it dry out completely before watering. If you use a terracotta pot, soak it before the first use; dry terracotta acts like a sponge.
Buy some cactus gloves- that’s all I have to add to the great advice already given lol! I love them but have spent too many hours digging spines out of my hands.
Hello David ! I have some advice for you on your cactus plant ! If you haven’t already moved it to a new pot you should probably take it out and move it into a different one because I’ve owned a couple of cactuses and they’ve died because of mold Buildup on the bottom of the pot . mix some cinnamon with water to prevent mold, give it cinnamon water about every two weeks for about a month
