Winter prep
Moved him in for the winter. I heard something about them doing dormant for the winter.
Anyone know how often to water or if I water at all?

@PrizedToropapa Welcome to Greg!
In the late fall/winter, cacti go dormant and require less frequent watering- about once every 4 to 6 weeks depending how humid or dry your house is.

You donβt need to move it inside unless it gets super cold. Mainly just need to put a frost blanket to protect from the freezing winds. Those types of cacti can handle pretty cold temps and still regenerate. And the cold helps them go dormant and rest for the winter. In the winter only water slightly to get the roots wet instead of fully drenching like you would in summer. And maybe once a month at the most depending on weather. If itβs freezing then the roots should stay dry. If brought inside to temps that are too warm then it canβt properly rest and go dormant. It will grow and flower better the next year if it gets to rest in cold weather for the winter. Here in Texas they all survived 9 degrees Fahrenheit with snow on them outside and they are fine. And it was around 20 degrees for several days after and continued to snow. Bridges and everything froze and the wild cacti did just fine.
@SirLiquorice yeah I've seen one in my area in someone's yard survive through our NY winters, but I've got an emotional attachment to this guy and would be devastated if I left him out and he died. I don't keep my house super warm during the winter and he is next to the back door so hopefully he'll be alright. But thank you for the info! Love the added knowledge!
