My plants love LECA… too much

Hey friends😍 So. Fellow LECA users. I’m pretty new to LECA and my plants are LOVING IT, especially the alocasias. But tell me… what do you do when this happens? This is my alocasia low rider. A few weeks after switching to LECA, I took the first picture. And I took the second one over the weekend 👀Needless to say, I was shocked! And delighted. But what do I do now? Lol do I pot up? Won’t the roots keep growing like crazy? Eventually I won’t have a pot large enough! 🤣 #HappyPlants #AlocasiaAddicts #LecaLeague #RootPorn #NewGrowth #BeforeAndAfter #babevila

It's growing roots to support new leaf growth. Once it has established the necessary root system, it will start focusing its energy on foliage.
@BabeVila I’ve never used LECA so am no help, but… 😮 Wowzer!!!
@BabeVila oh damn girl, I hadn't seen the new profile photo and didn't realize it was you!! 😂😛
Hi Shannon @BabeVila 😊 Wow that’s fabulous! I’m not a leca user but I’ll be very interested to see what people say!!🙌
@BabeVila I just recently started using LECA, and my plant seems to be doing super!! I was wondering tho. I potted my plant in just a clear plastic cup, but I see yours is in a clear cup with holes in it. Is there perhaps a special reason for that?
@BabeVila This is my plant..
@luvmygreenhouse hey! I use plastic orchid pots for a lot of my plants, just because they allow more airflow to the roots! Roots need oxygen and my plants all seem to really like it! I also like the clear pots so I can see the root progress, but as you can see the roots are going crazy through the holes lol. I didn’t expect that when I started experimenting with the Leca because with soil the roots don’t really do that! So I’m not entirely sure what to do, if i should just let them do their thing (which is what I’m going to try for now, unless the plant starts looking unhappy and then I’ll reassess lol!). But you don’t need the slotted pots, they’re just what I had on hand! I do think they’re great because of the aforementioned airflow to the roots, but my SIL, who urged my to try Leca because her plants love it so much, just uses regular clear pots like yours and they’re all doing great 😊
@luvmygreenhouse your plant looks happy! Look at the cute baby 😍
@stephongreg Thank you, Steph!! I like your new username 💜 Good to know, I was worried it would keep spitting out roots like this, lol. I’m very excited to new leaves on my alocasias since most of them have seemed to decide they only like to have one or two leaves at a time… don’t suppose you have any thoughts/advice on that? I don’t have all of them in Leca, my Polly is still in soil because he seems to like it just fine.
@BabeVila Actually the "baby" you saw there was actually a part of another plant that looked like it was rotting so I just "added" it to the other one...😀

Thanks for the info on the plastic pots! Actually I too like the clear pots cause then you can see how much the roots are growing!😄
@BabeVila haha, thanks! I changed it because "stephonicle" is my handle on everything and I wanted to be able to google search for old Greg posts and comments 😛 I now realize it looks like my name is "Stephon Greg", like some distinguished gentleman from the 1800s, so I might change it again lol 😂

Wish I could give you more advice on Alocasias, but honestly I only have one, a small Polly, which I keep full time in my prop/humidity box. It's a little like cheating, because the plants in there require so little attention lol. My Polly had two leaves when I got it and now it has four, BUT the oldest leaf is on its way out. So I guess I'm in the same boat as you. Seems lots of people have the same issue with their Alocasias, maybe it's something about the biology of the plant..?
