The lowest leaves on my fiddle leaf fig are turning black...

This is not exactly normal, but FLF are notoriously picky.

Turning black makes me think that it is related to an issue vs a change.

My first thought would be that it's a sign of overwatering. How much do you let the soil dry out before you water it?
Last time I had a FLF at that same size and it was getting black leaves it was due to root rot and repotting stress. While that may not be the causes for Figgy, I would recommend checking the roots. You'd want firm pale colored roots, mushy and dark would indicate rot.
