#agave update... color and shape are looking better. I see a few ants but no scale at all upon quick inspection. It looks like it could use a good bath still. So far this looks like a good move. I didn't mention in my original post that it got over run by ants a few years ago in its pot and has had a minor scale problem ever since. I started treating the pups I divided with rubbing alcohol and I am definitely winning the battle although it's not over yet.
