Hi all! I haven’t planted my protea yet, it’s outdoors in...
6” pot with drainage
Last watered 1 year ago
@AceBonsi62 Welcome to the Greg community ! Detailed Care:
Light:
Red Pincushion Proteas require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sunlight encourages more flowers.
Soil:
They need well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH (around 5.5). Improving drainage by adding bark or grit is recommended.
Watering:
Water regularly, especially during the first year, to establish the roots. Once established, they are drought-tolerant but still need moderate watering. Temperature:
They can tolerate temperatures as low as 23°F (sometimes lower) and as high as 100°F but should be protected from long periods of extreme temperatures.
Mulching:
A layer of mulch helps keep the soil cool and moist. Keep it away from the trunk to avoid rot.
Pruning:
Prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage new growth. Cut back finished blooming stems halfway between the spent flower and the previous year's growth point. Red Pincushion Proteas do not need fertilizer. In fact, they are particularly sensitive to phosphorus and can be negatively affected by fertilizers containing it.
Pests and Diseases:
Good drainage and full sun help prevent fungal issues. If necessary, Neem Oil or Insecticidal Soap can help control pests.
Other:
Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal problems.
