Sounds like rotting or overwatering. I would recommend taking the plant out and inspecting the root system if the roots are wet, smelly, or or clearly rotted I would recommend trimming your roots, giving it about a day to callus before you repot it, and then repotting it and some either more well draining soil, depending on the plant that you’re referring to because there aren’t any pictures so I can’t give any more recommendations other than that. If it’s an orchid, then I I would recommend getting some orchid, bark to repot. If you’re not already using that because orchids can write very easily, and their root systems are very delicate.
