This looks like the wrong ID you have here, it appears to be a Gold Dust Croton, not a Japanese laurel. Crotons love light, can tolerate sun, and also generally really like water too. They don't like to be bone dry. Yellowing leaves can either be from under or overwatering, sometimes it's natural old leaf loss as well. 💕
