I am inexperienced with ferns -- I know they have shallow...

They are beautiful! I think you’re doing a great job πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ I don’t have either of those type of ferns, but the ones I do have seem happy. I was just thinking this morning it’s time to put my small one in a bigger pot so it can have more room. I’m thinking your one that’s looking crowded may be wanting the same thing 😎 I mist mine often because it’s so dry in CO. Otherwise, I find ferns super easy to care for. Enjoy!
Ferns have delicate roots so be gentle repotting. Young ferns can be up potted (bigger pot) every year. Then when it’s about the size you want slow down and repot (same pot) with fresh soil. They don’t mind being a bit snug in a pot and it will slow down how big they can get. You’ll just need to water more often because the pot won’t hold as much moisture. I don’t mist mine but it’s also pretty humid in coastal San Diego. For the birds nest ferns take care not to get water in the crown. Crown rot is a thing 😳. Oh and when you up pot or repot make sure the crown is set level with the soil. You don’t want it lower.
