It sounds like you found a Purple Heart plant (Tradescantia pallida), a beautiful and hardy plant that’s great for beginners! To help those stems grow roots, placing them in water as you planned is perfectβ€”Purple Heart propagates easily in water. Just submerge the bottom inch or so of the stems in a glass of water and place it in a bright, indirect light spot. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh, and you should see roots forming within a week or two. Once the roots are an inch or so long, you can plant the cuttings in soil. They’ll thrive in well-draining soil and need moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Enjoy your new plant babies!
Those usually do well in water to grow roots in my experience.
@JoysomeBreadnut They are very Hardy and easy to root. I have always just stuck them in soil and kept the soil moist until it started producing roots and have never had a problem with it not growing. Be careful if you plant them directly into the ground because they will take over! They are very prolific to say the least! 😁
thanks so much everyone! i can’t wait to see them grow πŸ₯° @princesspitstop @Redroxie @USAGardenHub
