Propping #stringsofthings
Good morning! I’m prepping for an Etsy shop in the fall and am trying a new method to propagate #StringOfHearts - before I’d throw cuttings in rooting hormone and then in water. But I saw this online and want to see if it’s better. Anyone else tried this? (I’m also trying out a new soilmix">#succulentsoilmix so I can compare that too.)
You take a cutting of your strings, wrap it around your fingers to make loops, and then lay that flat on succulent soil in a little pot. I’m excited to see how this looks in a few weeks! 🌱☀️❤️❤️❤️ #leafycatplants

@RealSimpleMama At first I had them under a grow light but didn't see much of a change so I put them in the shade on my patio. I think it might be the heat outside that is pushing new growth.
@princesspitstop damn I don’t have a shaded patio at all. I think mine would get fried if I tried to do that… I’ll keep thinking!
@RealSimpleMama I've got mine under the shade of another plant out there too. What about in your humidity cabinet??? I bet it would love it in there.
@RealSimpleMama look good I’m gonna screenshot, so I know what to do with my new ones. 😊👍🏽thanks for sharing
@SweetAzurebluet it’s… weird. 😝 it’ll take a while before I can decide what I think. I’m used to really light, airy, fluffy succulent soil and this one is not that at all!
@RealSimpleMama Wow! I wondered how to save a string that broke off, and just stuck the end back in the soil, a couple days ago. When I go home I will try your method! 😊 Thanks!!
@AC73LoveCats hey I bet that’ll work too! And I know for a fact that all of my stringies will also prop in water, even though they’re so thin and fragile. So if this works (I’m hoping that looping around and having more points touch the soil, will equal a lot more spots with roots and faster overall growth) then I know they’re the easiest in the world to prop!
@Charli3Plant sure! Keep an eye on the pearls, as they tell you how they’re doing. For example if they start to shrivel, they need water! And if you want to move them outside, do it bit by bit. So start inside but right by a sunny window… then a day or two later, move outside in the shade in the morning… I know it might seem silly but it helps the plant if it can acclimate more gradually.
@RealSimpleMama Oh my, yeah, I am kind of shock too!! But, are you going to try it anyway?
@SweetAzurebluet yep! So far just three of those SOH pots and I will see how they do over the next few weeks.
@RealSimpleMama Did you add any perlite, etc. to the succulent soil? What succulent soil have you tried and liked? I’m still on the hunt for for one I really like. Right now I’m trying Perfect Plants succulent soil, but I”ve added perlite and Bonsai Jacks Gritty mix when I pot with it.
@RefinedSandwort I didn’t add perlite to this small batch but I’m surprised that it doesn’t have it! I like the texture of Miracle Gro but am trying to avoid those products (and I did always add perlite to the bag). Otherwise I haven’t ever found one that I like. I may keep using this one if I like it (as I do appreciate the infredients) and just add a lot of perlite so it looks more normal to me! 😝
@RealSimpleMama I’ve added perlite or perlite and Bonsai Jack’s Gritty Mix to everyone I’ve ever bought after I learned most of it needs amending. The lightest and fluffiest I’ve bought was from Planet Dessert— a little pricey, but probably didn’t need as much amending.
Mountain crest gardens has a really good article on soil on their website. It includes information on mixing your own and/or amending potting soils. I am pretty new to this, so I’m in no position to give advice. I am experimenting and learning as I go! Are we allowed to post links to articles here? If so I am happy to. I’m new and not sure of the rules 😊
@Mailei hi! Welcome! Sure, post away! We’re always helping each other and learning. Thank you for sharing with us! 🌱☀️❤️
@Charli3Plant wow 😮 how it perks up. I’ve only seen the regular ones
@RealSimpleMama here is the article https://mountaincrestgardens.com/blog/succulent-soil-the-ultimate-guide/. There is a mix your own guide as well.
I’ve had luck using the “butterfly method” to make even more efficient use of your plant material. Each pair of leaves on a healthy, mature plant can quickly root.
Greg won’t let me post the link for some reason but search for “butterfly method” and look for a site called Ohio Tropics if you’d like to see the guide I used
