The transition could be bumpy either way as it has to grow water roots. I’m a rip the bandaid off kind of girl so I’d do it early and expect to lose leaves if you’re determined to go semi-hydro. I’ve found a great in-between to be fluval stratum and perlite- my baby alos love it.

@NewElkclover17 just make sure the bottom of the rhizome isn’t sitting in water or it will rot (ask me how I know lol). I keep the water line well below the bottom of the rhizome and mark it on the pot so I know where it is.
