Thinning
Heeey! I have a chain cactus and I think Iβm killing them!! Theyβre thinning out! I live in a van so it is very up and down! But I always have them hanging outside. I read that bring indirect light should be shaded but still see the sky so Iβve been putting them in the vans shade! Iβm now wondering if this is too much! Iβve been watering them weekly, and theyβre just thinning more and more! Any help would be appreciated! Iβve started propagating some chains but theyβre thin, so I donβt know if Iβm too late #Rhipsalis
Hi π your rhipsalis looks dehydrated. Rhipsalis isnβt a desert ποΈ π΅ and requires more water than the desert type. Itβs actually an epiphyte and grows in the rainforest. Check the soil to see if itβs become hydrophobic - not absorbing water anymore. When that happens water just flows through and out the drainage holes but the soil is still dry. If thatβs happened you can give the plant a good soaking to rehydrate the soil or replace the soil with fresh soil. How long has it been in this pot?
@MariansOasis hello Marian!! Thank you for your comment!!! πππ
The soil still feels wet, I changed the soil two days ago as I didnβt think they were liking what I put them in! I originally put them in a bigger pot.. then they got root rot. So I put them back into their original pot. So in other words they are not having the best time with me πππ Iβm so hoping to figure this and to make them happy!! Do you think itβs worth me sitting them in some water then they can soak up what they want instead? Though, when I changed and watered them 2 days ago I did leave them to drink some that came through but only for like 5 minutes! I donβt know if any of this information is helpful in the investigation of Bob hahaha but I appreciate any thoughts you may have!!

Iβm so sorry to hear about this! You seem like a very sweet person and I hate it when our plants give us a hard time. π Unfortunately Iβm not familiar with these plants but I hope you can get them back to full health! π Do you move them in and out of your van a lot? I know plants donβt like being moved all the time and having to adjust to the air and temperature. Best of luck to you and your plants! π πͺ΄ π±
Awww thank you @Succulent_Soul yea! They do get moved about a lot! But with love and care hahaha but maybe itβs not enough for Bob!! Itβs too much manoeuvring and no constant! Iβm hoping, that maybe, just maybe, heβll adapt to it all!!! Thank you for you kind words and support!!! βΊοΈβΊοΈππ
@FitSalal25 of course I hope you get everything figured out! π
@FitSalal25 hi π again! If the soil still feels wet and youβve recently given him fresh soil then no, donβt soak him. Wait until the top couple of inches are dry and the pot feels much lighter when you lift it. Since youβve done a lot with Bob he probably needs some time to reacclimate to the changes. My experience with my rhipsalis is is slower to show signs of recovery and improvement. So just be mindful of your watering and be patient. It may take several weeks for the chains to recover.
