What is going on with my Alocasia?

Hey everyone,

So, my Alocasia Silver Dragon is turning all yellow and I don't understand why.

It was fine until maybe 2/3 weeks ago. I noticed the oldest leaf was getting yellow but the plant seemed to be getting a new leaf so I assume it was normal. Alocasia tend to do that.

I went on a little trip for Christmas and was gone for a week. When I came back, it looked like the picture 😱

I don't get it. I'm super careful with watering, I always check that the soil is dry before watering.

Could it be a lack of sun exposure? It has been really dark lately and I unplugged my plant lights while I was away.

I don't know πŸ˜” If someone has an idea and a suggestion on how to bring it back to health, I would be super grateful!

Thank you πŸ™

Oh no! The good thing about Alocasia is that if the roots and rhizome/corm/bulb/whatever-you-call-it is good, you can cut it back and it'll regrow!

Those leaves won't come back, may be worth it to go ahead and chop them and give it a repot to check the roots for rot.
@jaysjungle thank you! Yes, I was going to cut them, I just waited to take the pictures ^^

I really don't get how it could have rotted but I'll check the roots and repot just to be sure.

Alocasias sure are complicated πŸ˜…
@impeplants yeah, after 2 tries with it I gave up, even though the 2nd time around went much better. I just don't have the patience for such picky plants.
@jaysjungle I totally get it. I have 3 of them and while the first 2 are doing just fine, I'm always on my toes with them. But they are so pretty 😍
Hi @impeplants, turn the lights back on and make sure your plant gets a few days and nights of lighting. The leaves with creased stems need to be cut back since the plant has already decided to sacrifice them due to lack of light. Keep the stems that are not creased and are still green. Baby the plant without helicoptering it. Alocasia can come back but once the leaves yellow entirely and the stems fold and crease, those aren’t coming back so it’s best to trim those off to redirect nutrients to what can be preserved. This plant does this anyway but since your plant has been without light for a while, trimming those folded/creased stems will help it try to thrive. I would leave lights on daily for 16 hours if possible at this point. It needs as much as it can get to photosynthesize and produce chlorophyll.
Thank you @FitSedum! I'll leave the lights on for longer then!
I have one leaf left that's not completely yellow so I'll leave it and see how it goes.
@impeplants I’ve been down to one leaf before due to lighting issues and they come back. Keep lighting at an adequate level for a longer period of time. Make sure your plant stays warm and you should see some improvement. Good luck. Happy Growing! 🌿
Thank you @FitSedum! I'll try what you suggested and see how it goes
Looks like you have moved it into a pot without drainage? It looks overwatered. Mine prefers to dry out especially during winter.
Hi @Mjaubeibi40 the pot has drainage and I only water when the soil is dry.
Then I would increase the artificial light and more draining soil. This is mine now. Notice the soil.
@Mjaubeibi40 yeah, I put a lot of perlite in there and it seems to be fine for all my other plants (and alocasias).
Gotta increase the time it gets the light.
@impeplants do you have grow lights with timers? This type of light definitely works well when you’re away from the house.
@YammieOf3 yes, I do. The thing is that I don't like leaving anything plugged in when I'm not home for too long. I would unplug my fridge if I could πŸ˜…
I'm not getting much light right now because of the weather and because there are scaffoldings on my building. It's blocking a lot of light, that is why I bought the grow lights. But like I said, I unplugged them for 8 days when I went away. Probably a big mistake πŸ˜”
I actually have mine on when I am away, they can get a brake when I am back πŸ˜…
@Mjaubeibi40 yeah, I'm just too afraid that it would catch fire when I'm not there πŸ˜…
So, roots look totally fine to me
Yes! Bunch of good roots there - give it a small pot - trim the yellow leaves and place it Close to a light.
