Dwarf wisteria bonsai care in mid Missouri
I have acquired a bonsai lol. My soon to be sister in law purchased a dwarf wisteria bonsai but has no outside space for it so I took it in.
I believe while it was in her apartment it started winterizing so the leaves dried but haven’t really fallen off.
There is new growth so I’m holding out hope but wondering what I should do from here or what yall would do. Should I invest in the whole bonsai equipment shabang??

Welcome to the world of bonsai!
Your intuition is spot on, it’s fighting to recover and wisteria are tough buggers. What I would now is leave it outside (avoid afternoon scorching sun), and check the soil daily and water when the top bit looks or feels dry.
You can leave the drying leaves on for now, they’ll eventually fall off or brush off after a couple more weeks.
Do NOT fertilize it, it’s recovering but still stressed give it a few weeks to really recover.
Save your money and avoid buying bonsai equipment, invest some time into learning about the wisteria - that’ll prove better in the long run.
Does the soil drain well when you’ve watered it?

@FamedGymealily I’ve got it in a covered “porch” sort of area where it only gets a little bit of direct morning sun and bright i direct light the rest of the day. The soil is very well draining, I put about a cup to a cup and a half of just plain filtered water probably every 2-3 days and it drains right through however there is that little bit of moss to help retain moisture. When I water I make sure to get the branches a little moist as well. Thank you for your response!
@FamedGymealily and although I’m definitely planning to wait a few weeks to fertilize, what fertilizer would you recommend? For my house plants I currently have the purived 4-5-5 plant food fertilizer, would that work or should I invest in something more like a 7-9-5?
@br3nna great to hear the soil drains well, that’s one of the best things for bonsai, but also means it needs to be check daily in summer.
As for fertilizer the 4-5-5 is perfect, in fact you can dilute it to half-strength and feed it every couple of weeks after it recovers. No need to buy anything else 😊
Last year I missed out on buying a dwarf wisteria to my bonsai collection, still upset at myself over that 🥹

@FamedGymealily thank you so much for your help! I hope you get your hands on one eventually, I’m pretty excited to be dabbling in the art of bonsai for the first time especially with a wisteria🥹
@br3nna Always happy to help and share what I’ve been learning. I’m sure one of my bonsai books has wisteria information, can dig through them if you ever need any info
