How do you tell if a cactus is still alive? I also was wo...
@HelpfulFlax let the fake flower grow out. The cactus looks alive and healthy. No offense but did you make sure itβs not artificial? Please donβt be offended. Now days they make them look and feel real. Sorry but I had to ask
I hate that!!!! They should never glue fake flowers on!!!
Sorry I'm a bit irritated I hate when nurseries do stupid things to plants.
You definitely have to remove it! They use hot glue which can damage your plant and also hinder real blooms in the future.
To remove get some tweezers and use your hand to gently wiggle the flower free. Take your time you don't want to hurt your cacti.
For the pieces that are really stuck take a q-tip dipped in alcohol and use it to work away the glue and help loosen it.
Home Depot is one of the stores that does this the are called 'strawflowers' and they put them on to, in their minds make them look prettier to sell.

Sorry I got distracted by the flower and forgot to answer your question π
.
A dead cactus that died from overwatering will turn soft and sort of squishy.
One that died from not watering for years well that would be brown and dried up and sticklike. But before that happens it will get smaller and have some wrinkles.
By the way underwatering is definitely better that overwatering when you taking care of a cacti. They can live an incredibly long time without water.
I had one in the corner of my front patio that I forgot about for a very like time about 5 years. I know it's crazy. I take such good care of my indoor plants but the one on my patio was out of sight and forgotten for 5 years!!!
Well, I decided to bring it back and well today it looks perfect. This is her now. Sure the bottom of her stem is bare but I think she looks pretty good.
Your plant looks incredibly healthy.
My forgotten plant.
