These roses do have spiky stems, therefore I would wear protective gloves and long sleeves while working with it. I would cut about a foot off, all around the base, if possible. So much plant lying on the soil could attract different fungi. If you see any kind of bugs (aphids, spider mites) I would spray with neem oil. Always water from the bottom, with a soaker hose, if possible. They like moisture, but not wet feet. Once the base is cleaned/cleared our, I would add sone crushed eggshells for a calcium boost. If it hasnβt been fertilized, I would do that, too. A layer of mulch would help. These are pretty tough roses, but a good haircut is always needed, for health and appearance. Early spring is always a good time. Happy gardening.
