Help! What is happening to my String of Buttons? πŸ˜”

I was out of town for a couple days and when I came home this is how I found my string of buttons, Sir Plantsalot 😩 anyone know what this is or what caused it? It looks like some sort of root rot to me. Am I able to salvage the top part at all? Any insight or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! πŸ’›

That looks more like a Crassula Moonglow. All potted plants (but especially succulents) need a drainage hole in their container or this can happen. Definitely rotting and molding. You might be able to cut the green part and replant it. How much light is it getting? When they grow tall with lots of exposed stem, it's called etiolation. It means they're stretching out to find more light.
Definitely looks like root rot to me. Is the soil still moist? If so you may want to consider repotting it. And you should be able to salvage the top parts.
This plant has been a real challenge for me to grow.
Looks like they dried out I’ve had that happen
@TangibleGabisan thank you for your insight, it might be, I just used the classification that Greg gave me from the picture! The pot I have it in has a hole but maybe it’s just still not the right por for it. I’m going to try repotting it. Right now it is not in direct sunlight, so maybe I will try to move it to get more light as well. I really appreciate your help!
@YammieOf3 the soil isn’t moist to the touch but I will try repotting to see if I can save the top parts, thanks for your help!
