#BlackSpruce I bought Bruce to be my Christmas Tree this year. I was planning to transfer him to a nicer pot. However, my Daughter’s boyfriend (he’s an ecologist) advised me to wait till Spring as I might hurt him if I do it now. When I do transplant him what kind of soil would he prefer? As well ~ what kind of fertilizer should I get for him.
Waiting until spring is best, when the tree starts waking up it recovers from transplanting much more easily. Keep most of the root ball intact and just loosen the outer roots so they can spread. Fill in gaps with similar soil, like a mix of pumice, sand or Turface, and pine bark or akadama (clay pellet soil). Once it’s settled and actively growing, a balanced slow-release fertiliser like 10-10-10 or organic oil cake works well.
