Care tips for Lithops please 🫢🏻

So I bought these Living stone plants last week, maybe I'm testing myself πŸ˜… because when I was very much a plant noob, i bought one of these and killed it so fast 😬

I've already made a blunder, because Greg told me to water it every 2 weeks, and since it was dry as a bone i gave it a quick water so that i knew it's last water date.
Stupidly i decided to Google after this, and found they don't really want to be watered in British summer time πŸ˜… and thrive in really dry environments... I've stuck them in my super sunny window so hopefully it dries out some.

So, i was wondering if anyone has any tips to keep these little brains alive.. πŸ™ #lithops #lithopsarmy #livingstones

No tips but...wow what a cool plant!

They’re beautiful! First tip, never follow the greg watering schedule. It will almost always tell you to water too often with almost every plant. Secondly, this is a great video that I learned a ton from on lithops! The main thing is to get them quickly into a very gritty mix. Some people use chicken grit, I use jacks bonsai.
It is Very easy to kill them. Be very careful with them.
@MamaLinne agreed on the watering schedule. The plant should set the schedule not an app. While it’s a nice general guide if you’re new to plants, there so many variables. I am in all caps NOT EXPERT with these but when I had one, I treated it like a succulent, basically ignoring it and giving it lots of light and it seemed to be fine
@Just1More Wait so I shouldn’t trust when it says to water my plants. I only have succulents and cacti but I rlly don’t want to kill them
Here’s another helpful visual, although I’m convinced they need a year in optimal lighting and growing medium to find their way. They sit in dark big box stores and probably have no idea what season they’re in lol!
Lipoths are a hit or miss too much water as the rest said is sure death . I water mine when the tops get wrinkly. I also don’t water at all once they start to spit. It may not be the best idea to have them in a crowded pot due to them not all maturing to split at same time . I noticed this when some needed water and others couldn’t have . I also used an eye dropper if any in pot needed watering while others were splitting. At this point all mine are splitting so they’re all feeding off the leaves. Here’s some pictures of the no water splits. Good luck πŸ€ Just please let them dry out completely I mean bone dry before watering them again.
I like the Greg app water schedule because it tells me the last time I watered each plant. I too, however, don’t go by it because it tells me to water a certain plant way before it needs it. I always feel the soil to see if dry, feel the weight if the plant (usually heavy means still wet), and now that I have these terracotta moisture worms- buy are they even more help. I’ve been on Greg for 2+ years and I’m still getting few updates to watering schedules. Greg is great for so many reasons. And we all live in different climates and have plants in and outdoors, so what works for me- may not work for you. My fave on a Greg is being able to talk to people and get/give advice and get educated.
@roypowers definitely use it as a guide, but I use a chopstick and I stick it into the soil and if it comes up damp, particularly with succulents I don’t water. I wait till it’s dry.
Hi Laura, sometimes I think Greg tells us to water our desert plants way too often. I also grow the living stones, Lithops, plants and I’m a big fan of them. These plants seem to thrive on β€œneglect”. I have a spray bottle that I put on a fine mist and spray mine, lightly ,around the soil once a month that’s all they need. Also, they may look like they’re dying when they’re actually growing new leaves. I found this out. I thought one of my plants had been overwatered. It was just peeling back old leaves and starting new ones. I hope this helps. 😁✌️
What a response already 😍 thanks guys, imma have a read later when i can absorb it all better 🫢🏻
