Based on the shape, it's probably a type of thread algae [i believe it's called staghorn algae]. Euther that or hydra, but looks a bit big for hydra. I'd remove it. It will overwhelm the slow growth of the marimo. The algae takes hold with lack of water movement, which coincides with you not changing the water. Remove it carefully, just a tiny piece is enough for it to grow back
