Discovering cactus glochids: a painful lesson

#PlantFactNOW I learned that the invisible Cactus hairs that get stuck in your fingers and you don’t notice until you rub it the wrong way and it hurts like nothing else then you can’t see it to get it out are called glochids. One of the nurseries I visited had warnings on their spineless cacti. This prickly pear I rescued from a parking lot definitely has them.
ouch
I have some large cacti in my yard and fine ones are indeed the worst.
Thanks for the info! How are your foundings doing? I found these lobes on a branch that had separated from it's mother plant - there are plenty left for it to root there on its own. It just seemed better to take from the damaged bits than from a healthy plant since I was able! And then I forgot to put the lava trick in the potting soil... D'oh! These lobes are spineless, but full of glochids! I used kitchen tongs and some newspaper to maneuver them and still I've just now got those buggers out during my shower.
They’re actually great! I thought one was a goner and I tossed it into a garden bed and now it has roots lol! I’m guessing next year it will take off
Rock on!
@Kaleyeeaah I mean I’m not happy they hurt, just happy you tagged #PlantFactNOW ! Lol
@Paradox I wear rubber dish gloves for handling my opuntia, which is covered in tiny glochids... πŸ™ƒ
@WickedValkyrie oooo good idea!
