Why are my succulent's leaves turning brown?

#WhatTheSucc this kid has crusty brown leaves, they’ve turned that way one at a time. It’s always the bottom leaves, so are they just getting old? I considered that it needs watering more, but the other two succulents I was watering on the same schedule rotted 😬 it’s just under a grow light,, which I try to remember to turn on every day for 12 hours. Originally it was on full strength, but decreased it to 60% to see if that helped. More leaves have gone dry since then. I’m just trying really hard not to make drastic corrections that will accidentally kill it 😅
probably some zebra plant variety! haworthias need less light than what most sucs enjoy. they prefer bright indirect light, i don’t use grow lights so i don’t know what adjustments you could make unfortunately ^^; how often are you watering this guy?
@strawberrymoon Like maybe every 3-4 weeks
@Struggleisreal i think the soil + watering frequency might be a bit iffy for this plant, the soil looks quite organic (succulents need at least 50% inorganic gritty stuff in the soil- pumice, perlite etc.) i think people usually water them every two weeks or so when in the correct substrate, but be sure to check if the soil is completely dry first + if you decide to repot, don’t water for the first 3~4 days at least. i try to wait a week but if the plant looks really thirsty you can water sooner as mentioned above :)
@strawberrymoon It’s a 50% organic mix, 50% black gravel. And the pot has extra ventilation in the sides, so it really shouldn’t hold much water. I just hesitate to water it when my others in the same situation rotted.
@Struggleisreal ah i see.. sorry the soil mix looked pretty dark so i assumed it was organic!! what i do with my haworthias is to water them a couple days after the soil dries out completely. were your other succulents also in the same family? my haworthias tend to enjoy a bit more water than my echeveria and sedum
@strawberrymoon they were all haworthia, but the others were slightly more plump varieties. I would have expected them to want more water, but I guess actually they probably store more water, so need it less frequently?🤷‍♀️ I’ll try to increase watering just a little, and watch for improvement. Thanks!
@Struggleisreal np- i’m guessing it was the translucent variety? i have two of those and they get watered every 10 days or so + they’re in like 90% grit. i’m pretty sure the translucent haws have slightly different requirements compared to the hard leaved ones :)
@strawberrymoon Yup 🙄 RIP
This is Haworthia Limifolia. I have one in my collection. It doesn’t like direct sun or super bright light. It will turn brown in those conditions.
@vvvelo Ok, how familiar are you with using grow lights? Do you think I should make it dimmer? Or have it on for a shorter duration?
@Struggleisreal I don’t see any issues with your plant on that photo, except I’d guess you underwater it.
