This is a really cool bromeliad that grows around the base of several trees in my Florida neighborhood because it propagates so easily - you just lay one there and it’ll start growing - plus it even likes deep shade.

Several weeks ago, I brought some of them back to my garden to start here, and after cleaning them up and peeling back the old layers, I set them aside and just kinda forgot about them, until finally placing them around some oak and palm trees in my yard a 2 weeks ago. Then the other day I just happened to come across this baby bromeliad sitting in an empty pot, growing in complete darkness and with no soil or substrate of any kind. When I had peeled the rosette leaves away from one of them weeks back, I peeled it down to nothing (the leaves looked really bad) and so I tossed the base in that pot, thinking it was surely dead since it no longer had any leaves. Also you can see the roots it does have - they are so dry and just don’t look alive. But instead, the base has sprouted a new plant. Amazing! I can see why it got the name “fool proof plant”! I just love plants that insist on surviving!

(My main photo for this plant is of the group of plants/tree mine came from.)

Girl you gotta tell me where in Jax, cause haven’t seen any like that around here 😳
This is everythinggg, that lil baby is so precious already 🫣
@ApRiseandShine You’re in the Jax area??! Cool, I was hoping to meet another local! I’m in Mandarin, and my neighborhood is a small townhouse community. We have a large tree canopy covering most of the neighborhood that makes it almost all shade in many areas. It can be difficult to grow a lot plants here! But some plants really thrive in these conditions, like these shade loving bromeliads. How weird is that?! I’m glad you see the beauty in this, too. 🥰
@ApRiseandShine This is where I have mine. They’re currently growing on oak and pine trees around the neighborhood so I wanted to grow some on a couple of palms and an oak. I need to get pictures of all of the areas where this grows here.

Hey, if you’re ever in the area, I’d gladly share some with you! It’s meant to be shared. 🌿🌱💚
@ApRiseandShine Wanna see it look even cuter?? Look at it in my hand! It’s just itty bitty. One of the other plants has a lil red pup growing, too. I’m so in love with this little survivor of a planet! 😍

I’ve always wanted to try growing an epiphyte on a tree so I’m really excited about trying it with this plant.
@LaneyLichen Omg, they’re so lovely growing on the oak and pine like that, I can’t with these pups 🫣 , plants are so amazing 😍
Only had one bromeliad 2 years ago that I killed due to overwatering; I’d hate doing that to one of yours 😭
I love to see them grow and be in the wild like that; saw some in Mexico and I almost ran to get one after coming back to the US but then I remembered my guilty past 🫠; can’t wait for you to spot a flower one of these days 🌺🙏🏻
Will definitely be ready to do the drive to witness that with you; it happens only once for them right? 😵
Please tag me when you’ve got some extra growth on this tiny baby 🤭🌱
@ApRiseandShine Can you believe that I found another one of these growing in a total dead zone?! I discovered this one in an area of my yard where nothing but an old patch of Bamboo grows — even St. Augustine grass doesn’t grow there, which you and I know is saying a lot! It’s not even near a tree trunk like the rest, so idk how it will grow there. I thought they were all no good since I had removed all of the leaves, but they really fight to keep growing!

I’ve killed bromeliads by overwatering, too. But I’m telling you, this particular bromeliad is so unbelievably easy and hardy! I’ve never seen a plant that wants to keep growing like this.

Just know that I will gladly give you some of these anytime, if you’re ever interested. I really like the idea of these cool little plants growing all over Duval. 💚🌱
@ApRiseandShine I’ve only had these down for a few weeks and they have already grown so much. The first picture is from July 18 and the second is from today - that’s the same little red pup plant.

Man I just love easy plants like this! 🥰💚😍
I know I’ve been posting these pictures like crazy but I also wanted to share this - I just happened to see it today - another empty stem that I assumed was dead but I just saw that it has a little green sprout! 😍😍🥰🥰😍 Such a cool plant! I almost missed it because it just looked like a stick!
