Saving my elephant ear philodendron

when i first got this guy he was so beautiful and big. the roots began to get root rot but i believe i saved it in time! i trimmed the healthy root and pulled away all the dead root. how should i be taking care of him?

May help to get soil that drains better. Or you can add perlite to the soil. May have rotted because it wasnโ€™t draining and drying fast enough. I let mine dry before watering again and that seems to be working so far. But Iโ€™m more experienced with cacti and succulents than I am with these types of plants. So far so good. It has been growing new leaves like crazy.
