Help! I planted this clematis late last fall w hopes that it would survive our Michigan winter. (Nursery said I was fine to plant!) so the top is blooming but you see how parts of the bottom look dead? They have never greened up. Should I cut those dead parts off or leave it?
It is completely normal for the bottom of a newly planted clematis to look at woody or failed to green up while the top blooms. You can safely snip off the brittle, dead looking stems. The plant root system is likely prioritizing energy into its existing blooms and new growth.
TIPS 🌱
• if the bottom stamps are totally dry and crispy, cut them further from the ground
• the top should be in the sun, but the bottom should stay in the shade.
• give it a deep watering during summer (2-3 gallons a week)
• Gently check near the soil for new green buds

Thanks Maci, I will try snipping off the dead looking stems AND giving in more water since there is no way it’s getting 2-3 gallons a week currently!
I know @DreamMachine has one, and I know she loves hers. Maybe she can help as well as Maci. But it sounds like Maci has given great advice. ☺️
