What is the LITERAL WORLD could have happened here?

One of my BOBO Hydrangeas was “topped” by something (first picture). The second picture is to show a comparison to the one next to it (not topped).

It looks like it happened a few days ago due to the “scabbing” on the branches.

From the jagged edges on the leaves, it looks to be deer damage. They don’t have front incisors, so they rip the leaves off, hence the edges, and they definitely eat the buds. (esp. the new, early growth). They stare me down EVERYDAY 🤬, as I do them. I use a homemade mix of an egg, dish soap, garlic, and a little hot sauce to deter them. Sorry that happened, as it’s so disheartening. 🙂🌱

Ugh 😩 how DARE they eat our plants! That little stinker (or stinkers) had one good meal. Glad to know there are good home made deer repellents! Thank you for your insight!
