Does anyone know what makes a crown of thorns thrive? Mine has merely survived since I got it a year or so ago. I have had them in the past and don’t remember them being hard to grow. Am I forgetting something about these darlings? Any advice is appreciated🦋
Hi Teri, you don’t have much info on your plant id tag, so here’s some info- This Crown of Thorns plant (Euphorbia milii) features vibrant red bracts surrounding tiny flowers. It is a slow-growing, drought-tolerant succulent native to Madagascar that thrives in bright, direct sunlight. The stems are covered in sharp spines, and the plant produces a milky latex sap that is toxic if ingested and can cause skin irritation. Often grown in small containers, this plant can bloom year-round if provided with adequate light and well-draining soil. Light Requirements- Sun Exposure: Give the plant 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight daily at a minimum, though 6 to 8 hours is highly ideal for maximum continuous blooming. Indoor Placement: Position your container on a sun-drenched, south- or west-facing windowsill. If the plant does not receive enough light, its growth will become leggy and it will stop producing flowers. Outdoor Placement: If keeping it outdoors during warm months, choose a location with full morning sun and a bit of dappled afternoon shade in extremely hot climates to protect the leaves from scorching. Soil- Soil Type: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Homemade Blends: You can mix your own media by combining one part regular organic potting soil with one part perlite or pumice to ensure the roots remain well-aerated. Adding a small amount of coarse sand or aquarium gravel can provide excellent drainage and add enough weight to keep the pot stable. Drainage - Warning: Avoid heavy, dense garden soils that hold onto moisture. Never let the pot sit in standing water, as the succulent roots are highly vulnerable to suffocating and rotting. I hope this helps! 🪴💕
