If you are wondering what you can grow and root partially in water (or aquarium) here is what Iβve had success with: #Pothos (pictured) #ParlorPalm #LuckyBamboo #Philodendron #EnglishIvy
Iβm currently trying; #PolkaDotPlant #Croton

Iβve been recently looking into some new aquatic plants I could grow in my aquarium so this was really helpful, thank you so much for sharing! βΊοΈπΏ May I ask if youβve had any success growing completely submerged pothos or philodendrons? Do you think these would work in an aquarium environment or would they still benefit from a little more airflow than a tank could provide?
@signorebean I have had success with about 1/3 of a philodendron submerged in water and pushing out leaves completely underwater with no issues. I have not tried with pothos. I would assume the same for pothos but Iβve heard eventually the underwater leaves fall and roots form instead. Something fun Iβve started doing is growing my aquatic plants above water and in vases, itβs like a whole new plant! Hope this helps π!
@FratPlanter Ahhh thatβs so cool! I never realised philodendrons were so versatile but it definitely makes sense since they love humidity so much. Thatβs incredibly helpful, thank you so much for your response! Best of luck with your future water baby experiments βΊοΈπΏ
@FratPlanter That is so cool. I was literally just reading an article yesterday about houseplants that can grow in water. https://www.thespruce.com/houseplants-grown-in-water-4177520
@FratPlanter very interesting, Kirby, I am exploring more and more this type of hydroponics...I am trying to develop a modified dutch bucket system....so I may be looking for more ideas like the one you have...thanks for sharing π
@snowtrooper great article, Michael the Spruce is the goose that keeps laying the golden eggs π₯ πͺΊ π π π π
@Luna978 Me too!! If you are taking a cutting let it callus for a day or so before you put it in water Iβve had better success that way
@0cccam thanks, they are all well over 10 inches and sprawling!
@Avocadonerd you should, what kind is it?
@Avocadonerd Greg says itβs a crown of thorns, Iβm not sure.
@Avocadonerd So Crown of thorns is definitely wrong itβs some sort of Echinodorus sp. probably an Amazon sword as they are pretty common. The reason it doesnβt look top tier right now is because they are heavy root feeders. If you donβt want to get a nutrient rich substrate you can add root tabs and it will be a lot happier. Also it looks like you left the rock wool around the roots? Itβs perfectly up to you to leave it on there itβs not really gonna be doing much if you do or donβt. If you choose to take it off teasing it off with running water works pretty well.
