Asking for personal recommendations!! Trying to find a low maintenance house plant that doesn’t need a crazy amount of sunlight, will be doing my own research but want to be open to suggestions! :) #NewPlantMom
@BustlingLime56 Hi Ashley! I would go for a ZZ Plant! You can get them almost anywhere now. I know that Home Depot and Walmart both have them, or had them last week! You can’t go wrong with a ZZ 👍🏻😁🪴🌿🌸
How would you define "not a crazy amount of sunlight"? If you have windows, what direction do they face? East and north facing windows get the least amount of light, whereas west and south facing windows get the most. Lots of plants will *tolerate* lower light, but that doesn't mean they'll thrive. Definitely steer clear of any type of succulent or cactus, since they require the most amount of direct sun. I'd look for aroids with native habitats like forest or jungle floors, where they only receive dappled sunlight through the tree canopy.
@stephongreg I have windows that face each direction, but unfortunately I have a tucked away cabin so the windows don’t usually get all that much sunlight in for long periods of time. Maybe 1-3 hours a day if weather is good.
@BustlingLime56 have you considered supplementing with grow lights? My house only has windows facing north and east, so I have a grow light set up for my plants that need more direct light. You can get a set of decent lights on Amazon for under $40. The brand Barrina makes great T5 strip lights, they come with the mounting hardware and everything. Otherwise I'd definitely stick to plants like Syngoniums or even pothos. Neither need direct sunlight, I think they'd do well in your space as long as they're not more than 3 feet from a window. There are lots of varieties too, I have several pothos and Syngoniums (common name arrowhead plant), all thriving a few feet away from my north facing windows. They're fairly low maintenance plants, just need to let the soil fully dry out between waterings 🤓
