C.S. Lewis on the birth of friendship

#GreggersSupportingGreggers

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another "What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .”
-C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
Good morning, Mary and thank-you.

I find C.S. Lewis to be a wealth of comfort, encouragement, love... the kindly grandfather who never lies to me, never minimizes my suffering - experienced and yet to be experienced - but still firmly pushes me forward, telling me to get back to living inspite of it.

Another one of his quotes from The Four Loves:

"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable."

@CorvidFan my heart is in a safe deposit box buried under fort knox. I don’t make irl friends easily. The inner-webz is a lifeline #GreggersSupportingGreggers
@EdmundG I lt’s not a heart or love that is buried. It’s what we’re really afraid of, vulnerability. We think if we hide our vulnerability we can’t be misused or abused. We’re not afraid of love. We all crave it. But, we are thoroughly afraid of being hurt. We aren’t blocking out love. We are walling ourselves off from joy which is the direct result of love. We just don’t get to experience any of the joy without it.

On some level, you “love” Greg. You love communicating with us. You love your plants. You love, I assume, beautiful sunsets and thrilling music. Those just don’t make us as vulnerable to hurt. We can handle the risk. And there is risk. You can’t escape it.

Greg is a marvelously safe, caring, friendly, and enjoyable place. But, not always. I had been on the site for only 2 weeks or so when I posted a question. “If you were forced to give away all of your plants but 3, which would you keep?” Obviously just for fun. I was absolutely stunned and hurt by one of the responses. “🤬 you, you 🤬. But, every other person who responded seemed to enjoy it and their responses were varied and interesting. The risk brought me joy that far outweighed the nastiness. It’s all about managing the risk so that I can tolerate bad outcomes while letting myself enjoy life. Sometimes from a distance. ☺️

@CorvidFan I love C.S. Lewis, too. In general, I love poetry and philosophy. It has a way of getting deep inside of me and teaching me about life and myself. It relaxes me and gives me joy..
