Hi all! Iโm a few weeks in to my houseplant journey. Growing up I always did outside gardens with veggies with my Dad so itโs a whole new world. I set this up in my entry way because aesthetically it looks amazing here. Now that I am in it Iโm realizing maybe itโs not enough light.i open my door for a few hours a day to try and help but Iโm wondering if you think me moving this to my dinning room would be better? Or do I buy another shelf for my plants that love light and just have a jungle? Any advice would be appreciated! ๏ฟผ #newbie #NewPlantMom
It does look beautiful! I started having more success with plants when I research what they wanted vs putting them somewhere that I think they look good. Thatโs not really enough light for some of the varieties you have there, but trailing philodendrons and pothos would look amazing and do just fine! Grow lights are another option- I have them in the darkest areas of my house.
Well hi ๐ Welcome to Greg ๐ฅฐ Plants need to be at least within 1-3 feet of a bright sunny window to get enough light for ~10-14 hours per day to grow well, especially that monstera on top.
And not every window is equal. South facing is best and has the most light all day, followed by East and West. North facing windows (in the northern hemisphere) will have the least amount of light, and only plants that grow in lower light can survive in those.
Low light to a plant is considerably brighter than what our eyes perceive as โlow.โ
These plants could be here though, but only if you get grow lights. Sansi and barrina lights are a good place to start.
I recommend some reading, as there is a lot of misinformation on the internet:
-Gardening Under Lights, by Leslie Halleck
-Houseplant Warrior, by Rafaelle DiLallo
-The New Plant Parent, Darryl Cheng
-The Science of Plants, Smithsonian
Happy growing!

I see a jungle dining room in your future! ๐ Your corner set up is adorable โบ๏ธ. Youโre right to be concerned with sufficient light ๐. Light is food for plants and without enough they merely exist, eventually withering away. One of the reasons outside plants do so well is lots of sunlight be it direct or indirect. So the plants in the corner set up will probably look okay for the first few months and then start to get issues. Opening the front door lets in some light but ideally the plants should be no more than 3 feet away. You can add grow lights though and keep your spot. There are some from Sensi that clip on to the pot and are hardly noticeable so it doesnโt mess with your asthetics ๐ Or move the corner display to the DR, perhaps where the FLF is? Although a happy FLF should probably never be messed with๐คฃ๐คช๐๐! In my house during the winter months my DR table becomes a jungle ๐ฑ๐ชด๐ฟ๐๐ต๐พ. Itโs prime houseplant real estate- the best light in all of downstairs ๐โ๏ธ๐
lol.
