Hi new plant friends! I got two Pothos plants about a year ago and they have mostly propagated well. They are in Sazerac bottles. People kept saying to plant them but the two shoots I took off and planted pretty much immediately died. So now they are just living happily in these big bottles. These are the first plants that I have ever managed to not kill. I’m dipping in to succulents now. I live in New Orleans and I think they’ll do well. Should I initially keep smaller ones inside under a grow light for awhile before putting them outside?
It really doesn’t matter whether you decide to put them inside or outside, the amount of water needed varies slightly. Do you have a bright window to keep your succulents in? A grow light is fine I just have better luck with natural lighting. If your going to put them outside just make sure they aren’t in the sun for too long and they will need more frequent watering. If you are trying to plant the pothos I would recommend keeping the soil very moist the first few weeks so it can adapt. Slowly over time you can start using less water. Just make sure that there’s a drainage hole at the bottom of the pot.
@NOLAPhoenix I was going to mention that when you propagate a plant in water and the roots grow only in water, they have water roots, not soil roots. There is a big difference! The soil roots have a protective layer on the outside to protect them from that soil or anything else damaging them, they don’t grow that when propagated in water. When you move water roots over to soil you have to keep the soil moist for a several weeks at least until the roots grow the protective layer they need to thrive in soil. It looks like those have been in those bottles for a long time so you might want to even move them to moss first, I’ve heard of that working but I have never tried it, I always just keep the soil moist and use something like pure peet moss initially so the roots won’t damage and once the plant starts growing good then you can move it to regular organic soil with all the bells and whistles😁 @Succulent_Soul had the right idea with keeping the soil moist, it’s a must if you want them to live through the change. GOOD LUCK!🪴🌺🌼
@Succulent_Soul For now my succulents are under a grow light waiting to be repotted and placed outside. The front of my house where it would go gets full sun all day.
@NOLAPhoenix the grow light is perfectly fine but I'm not sure if you should keep them in full sun all day otherwise they might roast and dry up. 3-6 hours of sun is the sweet spot for my succulents. If they are in a very warm area, you will have to water them more frequently.
