This Scalprum is just about ready for a new jar! He’s getting too magnificent πŸ’• I love it when corms work out
2” pot without drainage
Last watered 3 weeks ago
Ooh beautiful, Milo! @MilkNewt Did you root in sphag only (and from what I can see, perhaps leca at the bottom)? I am also in the PNW, but if I attempt to root in only sphag it gets fuzzy growth within 12 hours. Do you get that at all, and if not, what’s your setup like? πŸ™
@DreamMachine yes I do! I do about 1-1 1/2 inches of LECA at the bottom for a drainage layer, and then Sphagnum Moss for the substrate. I let the moss soak for 15 minutes on watering day with a very light fertilizer in with the water, and then dump out as much as possible and let whatever’s left over collect at the bottom. I have had problems in the past with mold growth, but keeping a fan gently blowing on it seems to help keep the mold away. I only water when the moss is crunchy dry. I learned this technique of semi-hydro from some German guy on Instagram back when I was on social media, and he always had these huge gorgeous Alocasias. Seems to work pretty well!
@DreamMachine I have a cloche that I start all my corms in because they love the humidity :)
@MilkNewt oooh very pretty cloche. πŸ₯° Have you read the book Tiny Plants? By Leslie F Halleck. That cloche just made me think of it since she adores cloches and has lots of different glass enclosures from fancy to ordinary for many of her tiny plants.

Well, barring when I have them in humidity boxes, a fan will probably be my best bet since I do all of those things too minus the fan. Maybe I don’t need humidity boxes πŸ€”β€”said the bog witch πŸ˜‚
@DreamMachine I’ve been sleeping on cloches for too long! My local Michael’s almost always has them, and the nursery near my house has a collection that I love to wander now that I’m privy to them
@MilkNewt that’s awesome! I’m always on the lookout πŸ‘€ every time I’m in a thrift store πŸ«™
